First question: has this worked for this camera a computer in the past?  If not, determine if the camera will work on another computer.  If software is required, is it loaded on this computer?  If yes, uninstall and get the latest version from the manufacturer's website.  It is possible that auto updates on the operating system may have upset the current install. Try another USB port and another cable if available.  Make sure the camera battery is good.  Some units freeze with sub-par batteries.

It means that the transfer is in process. It's letting you know that you shouldn't turn off your camera - it is busy!

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or any other photo management program.

How do you upload a picture taken without a card on your Canon Rebel XT?

The rebel comes with a mini-USB adapter cable. Just plug it into your PC and the camera, and the PC should see it as a USB drive. Then copy or move the images as you would any other files. If you do not have the cable, they are available at Best Buy.

Only uploads certain photos?

Does your computer have enough space for all of the files? If you've checked that it does, you might try using a different program, such as Adobe Bridge. As a Canon user Canon's Digital Photo Professional is free (unlike Bridge), and it can allow you to see thumbnails of the images on your card. I've heard from other users to be sure you're using your camera to format the CF card and not your computer- somehow that affects the file storage system on the card. Good luck.
