Question about Lexmark Wheelwriter 3 Typewriter

IBM Wheelwriter 3 typing incorrect characters

I have an older Wheelwriter 3 that does not type the correct characters. This is only a problem with the character keys - the margin set keys, carriage return, correction, and backspace keys all work correctly. For example, when pressing the 'a' key, it will type a lowercase 'n', but when holding shift or with the caps lock on, it will type an uppercase 'J'. All of the character keys do this, and they are consistent in the characters that are typed.

Any ideas?

Geno111 - I can't seem to find any batteries in the machine. I left it unplugged overnight, which didn't help.

DickyO - I do not have another printwheel. I did blow out the entire printhead area with compressed air. This still did not help. I did notice, though, that the wheel is parking on the 'n' instead of the 'a'. This is consistent, and looking at the wheel, it is typing everything one letter to the left of what it is supposed to be typing. Is there any way to adjust the printwheel?

If you have another printwheel try that, if you still have the trouble try blowing out the area where it is in stalled. If that fails turn the machine off then back on, after it completes the POR mark the printwheel with some white out, repeat the POR see if the mark is in the same place, if it isin't you probably have a selection plate problem.

    Check the rt. keyboard ribbon connector to be sure it is pligged in, if it is then try this;

Hold the code key, press & release L key type 001 release the code key. If this works you need a keyboard or go through this every time you turn it off.

Is there an auto correction feature

The key to the right of the spacebar with the "X" printed on it is the correction button. You just place the carrier on the character to the right of the wrong one and hit the corr. button. The carrier should automatically back up and and remove the incorrect character and if you hold the key down it will continue to back up and remove characters. then you just type in the right one(s). Of course you have to have good "correctable" ribbon and correction tape cartridges installed. If the tapes are old you may have to advance them by typing and correcting or by manually advancing them before they will work. If the correction doesn't remove all the ink from the paper you may have a bad ribbon and/or correction tape.

Please help i have urgent work to type but my IBM Wheelwriter3500 by LEXMARK is typing half characters

Half characters? Top or bottom? Please remove the ribbon and reinstall it. Likely it got folded. Make sure as well that the correction tape is properly seated. Otherwise it can get in the way. Unless it is a multistrike, you should see the characters imprinted on it. Just like Columbo when he solved another ****. Good luck.

Typing characters that are not intended

Try these troubleshooting suggestions for your problem:

Wrong Characters Print or Characters Space Incorrectly:

1. Turn the typewriter off, wait 30 seconds, then turn the typewriter
on again and try typing again.
2. Make sure the LANG indicator is off.
3. Try a new printwheel.
4. Look for objects In the path of the carrier.
5. Make sure the printwheel is changed when there is a language
change.
6. If you are playing back, make sure you use the same pitch
printwheel you used when you typed the text.

Faint printing on checks

To my knowledge the 999 ribbon is the best avaivable. Try these things. put a little light (WD40 works well) oil on the back side of the print solenoid, then perss code and "Q" the display will show 1,2 or 3 set it at 3 and then try code "B" for bold print. These should help.

IBM Wheelwriter 3500.

Does the display show aP/W nomber other than 001?
If it does hold the code key, press and release the "L" key type 001 release the "L" key this sets the keyboard to U.S., if this works the cure is to replace the keyboard.

Wheelwriter 3500 only printing top half of letters

Sounds like the platen is not fully seated in the side frames, align the black latches with the frames and press firmly on both sides of the platen. the latches do occasionally crack in witch case you may need a platen replacement.

Character spacing

Joany, look for a function, usually on the left side of the keyboard on the IBM,that has the markings 10,12 and 15. And if my memory is correct, there will be a series of lamps which light up at the selected pitch. I would look for a key marked "pitch" and press that. Good luck.
