Question about D-Link DI 514 Wireless Router (DI-514)

Using a Dlink DI-514 as a simple hub

I have a DI-514 that I would like to use just as a hub not a router. Is it possible to configure it so that the router side is disabled and it just give me more ports for my existing router?

Any router can be used as a hub by not using the WAN port. The cable which connects to the rest of your network goes into one of the 4 LAN ports, leaving you 3 wired open ports to connect additional devices. The wireless part will continue to function nomally.

You'll want to disable the DHCP router function in this router. Do this before setting it up as the hub. Connect to it with a cable from a desktop machine into the router - no other network connections at the same time.

Either use the setup CD for the router, or browse to the router address (192.168.x.x) depending on if you're using the default address, or it's been reconfigured.

Then turn the DHCP server function off.

Connect it to the rest of the network, and you're good to go.

If you are trying to use a router as a hub it should be straight plug and play, unfortunatly hubs are a bit different from routers. You see routers smartly select which connections are most important and allow those connections to take presidence. Hubs allow all information to be shouted at once causing more of a congestion and a slower connection. As for the router once more, you will not get more connections unless your wireless.
I went on a tangent, i hope i helped your question.  If this doesn't answer your problem please post again.
Please post what you do and how you did it. I look forward to your posts.

You should connect to router configuration page using your web browser. Normlly the adress you should type is 192.168.0.1. If is the first time you install it or it has factory defaults you will be asked a username and a password. Type admin as username and leave the password field blank.
Now you are in router configuration page. From here you can choose a password to protect your wireless lan and a password to protect router access.

Ssh remote computer access

It is possible to limit outgoing connections, but generally a firewall is used to limit connections being initiated from the outside (incoming connection attempts). Check the settings in your router to ensure that it isn't limiting outgoing connection attempts, but it sounds more like a permissions issue on the server your are trying to connect to.

Wont connect to internet

I might advise you to reconfigure the DI-514 Wireless Router, Access the IP address 192.168.0.1 using the Internet browser and configure as Dynamic IP address. You got a red light because the router is not configure yet or no Internet connection from your provider.

Want to use Dlink DI-514 with Qwest modem to hardwire 2 computers

Believe it or not, Actiontec modems from Qwest are setup as a router already (even though ports are missing from it). You should use a switch instead of another router. Otherwise you will have to configure the DI-514 to act as a switch rather than a router. This is done by assigning a new starting IP address into your DI-514. By default both routers use 192.168.0.1 as the default. You will have to plug the DI-514 seperately into a computer (to take it off the network) and assign a new starting IP address for the DI-514 such as 10.150.1.1 for example. Then you will be able to get it work. I would strongly recommend using a switch instead and turn the wireless on the modem itself (this is why the modem is the router). It will save you some headaches if the power goes out.

Dlink 514

usually, the router comes with a builtin WEP key which you can obtain from the router configuration page (try 192.168.1.1 with username: admin and password: password) and you can change the WEP key to an easily remembered phrase.
