Question about Microwave Ovens

2 Answers

My GE Advantium model SCB2001 just died. I had two or three power outages earlier in the day. I reset the clock each time and the unit seemed to be O.K. I was heating a plate of food in the microwave and it just stopped. No lights or anything shows on the display, and no interior light. I figured that a circuit breaker had tripped and so I flipped the appropriate circuit breaker, but that had no effect. There appears to be no power to the unit.

Can you access the FUSE to check it. Frequent outages results in power surges and that's what the fuse is about, protects from inside (short-circuits) and outside (surges).

If your microwave oven doesn't seem to work at all, check these: Fuses Usually, when your microwave oven doesn't work it all, the internal fuse (thermal fuse) is blown. This fuse protects both you and the oven. When it blows, you need to have a qualified appliance repair technician replace it.

Door switch If the fuse isn't the problem, check the door hooks and the door-release button. When these are broken, the door switch doesn't activate, so the oven can't work.

I have a GE Advantium microwave model 2001 scb2001 03. It stopped working in the middle of a cooking and power goes completely out. A few days before that there was metal odor when using microwave

Betty, it sounds like you might have 2 problems and the power shutting off could be an end result of the metal odor you described. The power shutting off, more than likely is just a blown fuse. That is usually a simple and in-expensive repair. The metal odor could come from either your magnetron or from the high voltage transformer. Either one of those is going to be a rather expensive repair and if repair part stores in your area are anything like in my town, unless you repair them for a living or know someone who does, you can have some difficulty in getting those parts. Sorry for the bad news, but it might be simpler to just replace the microwave.

The display on my GE Advantium microwave oven shows "LOCKED". I tried holding the clear/off button but it won't clear. the microwave is unusable at this point

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged for about 5 minutes.

If yours is an Advantium, one of these owner's manuals will help you set the clock if you need help:

If you still need help, note that FixYa's Web site is currently not notifying us Experts when replies to our Clarification Requests are posted, so please post a new help request, but be sure to include your full model number from the tag in or on the unit.

I have a GE profile advantium oven. The oven seems to operate, however the green display is blank with a dash in the upper left corner. Cannot set clock or get any written information from the green...

The first thing to try is a "hard reset". Unplug it from the power line for a minute, plug it back in, set the clock, then try again.

Let us know if the hard reset doesn't fix it.

Gibberish on the Front Screen

Try unplugging the unit for 30 seconds then plug it back in. The power outage may have been erratic and the MW did not reset properly.

Demo Mode

Unplug the microwave for at least 3 minutes, then plug it back in, and BEFORE SETTING THE CLOCK, press and hold power level and start for three seconds. This should flash "demo mode off". Set the clock as normal. Enjoy!

GE Profile Advantium Wall Oven 240 volts 950 Watts

How long does it run before it fails? Does it look like the display is getting scrambled characters? I'm leaning toward a bad magnetron, but it may be more or less than that. If you can give more details and especially the actual full model number (as opposed to the model name Advantium 120) that would help. Thanks!

GE Microwave DEMO MODE

I just bought a condo with a GE Spacemaker Mod# JVM1860SD
that was stuck in demo mode. (This mod# has been replaced by the JVM1870*** series)

I called GE twice in two days, and finally got someone who had the solution (and it worked):

  1. Unplug the unit for at least 30 seconds
  2. Plug the unit back in DO NOT SET THE CLOCK
  3. While the unit is still "booting up" and the display screen is lit with gibberish, HOLD THE POWER LEVEL AND THE ZERO BUTTON for at least 5 seconds.
  4. After 5 seconds, the screen will display "demo mode off"
It messed me up at first because the power level and zero pads don't beep when the unit is booting up... but it worked.
- Again, this is for the GE Spacemaker 1860-1870 series models only - The women who gave me instructions said she had different demo mode unlock methods for the 1400, 3670, 2070 etc... so call GE if you have a different model.
P.S. my model looks like this - the keypad setup is key http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SPECPAGE&SKU=JVM1870SK&SITEID=GEA
