Step 2: Run the Setup disk program to create the Setup disks

When you download the Setup disks, the download contains only one large program file. When you run the downloaded file, it extracts the files. You receive the following message:

This program creates the Setup boot disks for Windows XP. To create these disks, you need to provide 6 blank, formatted, high-density disks.

Please specify the floppy drive to copy the images to:

Type the drive letter for the floppy disk drive (this is typically drive A). After you type the floppy disk drive letter, you receive the following message:

Insert one of these disks into drive drive letter:. This disk will become the Windows XP Setup Boot Disk.

Press any key when you are ready.

When you press a key, the downloaded file starts to extract and copy the files. Continue to insert the blank disks as you are prompted to do this until all six disks are created. If the process is interrupted, you must run the downloaded program file again to create all six disks.

Make sure that you label each disk appropriately with the number that is specified by the program. You must use the disks in the correct order during the Setup process.

Step 3: Start your computer by using the first Setup disk to begin a new Windows XP installation

After you create all six disks, insert the first disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart the computer. The computer must be configured to start from the floppy disk drive. You may have to modify the BIOS settings on your computer to do this.

The Setup process starts. Insert the other floppy disks when you are prompted. You must use the Windows XP CD-ROM to finish the Setup process.

hope it helps

Down laod xp recovery disk

If you're running Windows XP and Windows crashes or becomes unusable, you may have to run a Windows XP recovery setup disk to make your computer usable again. When purchased, many computers don't come with a Windows XP recovery setup disk, but you can download one for free from Microsoft. The Windows XP recovery setup disk holds the computer software and files that you need to assist you in rebuilding your operating system.

Place a formatted floppy disk in your floppy disk drive. You will need six formatted floppy disks. Visit Microsoft's Download Center and download the version of the setup disk for your version of Windows (see links in Resources). http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=E8FE6868-6E4F-471C-B455-BD5AFEE126D8 Home Edition http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=8030 Professional Edition set up disks for floppy http://www.download3000.com/download_17676.html XP Recovery CD Maker Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional Edition have their own recovery setup disks and you must use the correct disk for your version of Windows. Click "Download" and then "Save." Find your floppy drive or optical media drive on the menu and click "OK." If Windows isn't functioning at all, you will have to perform these actions from a working PC. Remove the last floppy disk when the Windows XP recovery disk download is complete and place it in the computer on which you need to use it. Shut down your computer and then turn it back on. If your computer prompts you to boot from the disk, press Enter. If it doesn't, you'll have to go into your BIOS to set the computer to boot first from your disk drive. When your computer boots from disk it will automatically start running the Windows XP recovery setup disk from which you can then set up Windows XP. Hope this helps.

Hi, When I try to start my Dimemsion 5150C in Windows XP computer, I received one of the following error messages "Floppy diskette seek failure Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup...

The "floppy" disk-drive (3.5-inch diskette) on your computer is broken.
Press F1 to ignore the error, and to boot from your C: drive.
Or, press F2 to enter BIOS SETUP, and then navigate through those "setup" screens to tell the computer to "disable floppy seek", or change the setting from "3.5 1.44Mb drive" to "none".
Or, take the computer to a technician, and buy a replacement disk-drive, and get it installed.

I have just installed my first dual boot XP and Ubuntu on my old desktop. The floppy drive is recognised on XP but not on Ubuntu - What do I need to do to use it under Ubuntu 8 ?

Here are the steps to follow:

1. Click on "Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal".
2. In the terminal type "gksudo gedit" and enter the system password (you created this when installed Ubuntu). This will enable you to temporarily edit the "modules" file which is usually a read-only system file.
3. Click "Places -> Computer".
4. Click on "Filesystem".
5. Open up the directory (folder) called "Modules". It is the grey icon nearer the bottom of the list (you have to move the navigation bar down).
6. The file "Modules" should open in the "gedit" program.
7. It should look something like this:

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

fuse
lp

8. Now add the word "floppy" to the bottom of the file. It will now look like this:

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

fuse
lp
floppy

9. Now save the file by pressing pressing the "save" icon.
10. Exit the "gedit" program.
11. Now restart ubunutu (reboot the computer).
12. After reboot is complete, the floppy icon should be found under "Places" on the panel. Click on it to open a floppy. Remember to "unmount volume" when you remove or change the floppy. Linux will not let you change floppies like windows by just popping it out.

Hope this helps!

try going into your BIOS and changing the boot sequence, it may be set to boot from floppy instead of harddrive. or you could just reinstall windows, but that sucks cuz then you lose all your data and programs. and not to be rude, but you shouldnt have bought a dell, they are full of problems.

Do you have a floppy drive in the drive if so remove it. Also turn off your floppy drive or just remove it completely it could be bad sending false info to the main board saying there is floppy drive in the computer. Also try and turn the drive off in the BIOS

This is what the boot.ini file should look like. Use U'r recovery disk to create or edit the ini file as above. U cannot use DOS 6.22 to create this file if U'r system is formated in NTFS.
If U don't have a recovery disk, make one from someone else's XP computer (DOS 7.xx).
