We have a washer full of clothes and water which won't drain. When we swtich the dial to drain, and pull to activate, there is a clicking sound. A couple of times, the circuit breaker tripped. Nothing happnes when we swtich the dial to any other setting.
Any help or direction, particularly driaining the washer, or better yet fixing the problem, would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul
The symptoms you describe are typical of a lid switch problem. The lid switch is usually located on the right hand side under the cabinet. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the right side of the wash tub opening. Make sure the lid strike is still on the lid and intact, first. Then, check the mounting screws that hold the lid switch in place (two screws along the tub rim on the right hand side). Often all that is required is to tighten up the mounting screws and this will realign the lid switch where it can be properly activated by the lid strike.
If the lid switch is broken, you can find a replacement at searspartsdirect.com. If the model number you have this listed under is correct, just type it in the search menu at the Sears website. Type the model number in as follows : "110.1586400", or "110.1586200" to complete your search. A COMPLETE model number from the washer nameplate (located around the wash tub opening under the lid) would be more helpful. You can find the switch under the "Top and Cabinet" heading as item number 11. The lid strike is listed under the same heading as item number 20. If you do not wish to order online, take the part numbers provided by Sears and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. These are common parts that most will carry in their store inventory. The following link explains how to replace the switch:

If the lid switch is functioning properly, you may have something binding in the drain pump. The lid switch is an easier option to attempt first as it does not require you to drain the tub in order to repair. If the switch is not the problem, please post back and let me know. The drain pump is easy to replace, but will require some effort in getting the tub drained in order to install a new one.
Both repairs are inexpensive and can be easily accomplished on your own. I hope you find this information helpful. If you require additional assistance, please let me know.
