Minimum hardware requirements for Windows 98: 1. 486DX 66 megahertz (MHz) or faster processor (Pentium central processing unit recommended). 2. 16 megabytes (MB) of memory (24 MB recommended). 3. Hard disk space may range from between 120 MB and 295 MB, depending on your computer configuration and the options that you choose to install. 4. A full install of Windows 98 on a FAT16 drive requires 225 MB of free hard disk space, but may range from between 165 MB and 355 MB, depending on your computer configuration and that options that you choose to install. 5. A full install of Windows 98 on a FAT32 drive requires 175 MB of free hard disk space, but may range from between 140 MB and 255 MB, depending on your computer configuration and the options that you choose to install. 6. One 3.5-inch high-density floppy disk drive. 7. VGA or higher resolution (16-bit or 24-bit color SVGA recommended).
If your PC does not meet the above minimium requirements, you are bound to get errors popup installing or running software.
Go into the BIOS (watch your POST screen as you turn the computer on for instructions if you don't know how to get in there, it will say something like "press F2 to enter setup") and set your computer to boot from your CD drive. Put your restore or XP disk in the CD drive and reboot.

if you need an operating system and would not mind using linux (an alternative to windows) look on the www.puppylinux.com site and see if you would like to try it. the download is about 80meg and it runs very fast on all the computers i have used it with. or try looking on softpedia for a free download of the outdated windows xp install disks. or you can buy some disks from ebay. but i reccomend trying puppy linux, it is free and you have nothing to lose.(the disk is a live boot disk, so it should just run off the cd)
if you use windows 98 you can put in a start up disk and have it scandisk to fit it. try to run windows norally. sound like a hard drive problem, you can get windows cd's on ebay cheep. XP home is chepest.
The problem may be that you have too much space (sounds dumb I know) Windows 95/98 originally did not support drives as big as we have now, resize your drive down to less than 2GB and retry the install, or create a partition for the Game that si smaller. If you are running XP/Vista, you may be able to resize with disk Management, otherwise there is third party software like Partition Magic...
Right well XP Pro really MUST be formatted with NTFS only...
I suggest you get a third party partitioning program like Partition magic and completely remove the partition & redo it all again & this time Format NTFS.
Or if ya have a WIN98 boot disk, and ya can use FDISK, Delete ALL partitions, and remake them again, using all the disk space, then format as NTFS, then proceed as below
Then using your windows XP PRO setup Disk, start the install ...then when asked about where you want the install located, select C & REFORMAT it AGAIN with the windows setup using again NTFS file system... this should finish & then the Install should "see" your entire hard drive and format it accordingly and then when finished you can proceede to install XP.
