Question about Maytag HAV3460AWW Top Load Washer

Bin won't stay centred, leak during spin/rinse

Our tenants have had difficulties with their maytag top load washing machine - model # HAV3460AWW.

we used the washer for about 3 or 4 months without problem. we then moved it and didn't use it for almost a year. the first time we used it, during the rinse cycle, or maybe the spin cycle, it started to make a squeaking and thumping noise and gave off a burning smell, like burning rubber. water started leaking all over the floor. when we opened the top, the bin was way off centre. we cleaned up the water, balanced the load better, centred the bin properly, and tried again. it worked fine. we had tenants who used it for about a month with no further issue.

then, 2 months later (this last week) our new tenants used it for the first time and it leaked all over the floor. they didn't notice a burning smell, but there was the same squeaking thumping sound. we took a look and tried to balance the load and make sure the machine was perfectly level in case that was what was throwing it off. it didn't leak this time, but it almost seems like the bin is not supported at all, and even with a smaller, well-balanced load, it flies off of centre within the first couple of spins - banging against the sides of the machine.

can anyone help me out with this? i don't know if we're dealing with one problem here, or two (leak and bin misaligned).

would appreciate any ideas anyone has.

thanks!

katie.

i will try what you suggest with the cardboard, but that doesn't address the basket that doesn't seem to want to stay centred. there didn't appear to be any leak the last couple of times we used it, but we couldn't leave it on the spin cycle because of the basket banging around so much, so that seems to be our major problem now. i may not have been clear about that in my original post. thanks.

I have had washers do this many times and there is a simple solution. There a adjustments on the bottom of the washer. Simply get a level place it on top of the washer and level out the washer. That will stop the banging and fix the problem. Many times the floor is not level so don't trust it use the bubble level. This will help. Thanks

Check the easy stuff first, fill hoses tight?- drain hose cracked?
Failing those checks, cut a piece of cardboard slightly smaller than the size of your washer. Slip the cardboard under the washer and run a short load. Look carefully at the water mark on the cardboard. The mark on the cardboard the water leak will leave, will help you tell from which side or front to back the leak is common from. This will help point you in the correct direction to look for the trouble maker.

A common problem with noises from washing machines has been the under wire that may come out of any clothes. In the washer they can get stuck in one of the inner basket holes and make a scrapping noise, they can actually make there way into the pump and jam the pump, or make a terrible noise when the pump is running. Grab a flash light and have a peek inside the washer for this. Front load washers seem very common to this happen! In or the wire can actually pass through one of the heating duct holes at the back of the drum and touch something electrical like the heating element, thermostats. If the cloth is showing signs of fraying, may be best not to wash it in the washing machine,

Yes, there is...The legs on the washer are adjustable, the rear legs are often
( not always ) self adjusting, make
sure the legs are not stuck and that they can move freely. But the front legs
can screw in and out to move the washer depending on the floor the washer is
sitting on. Make sure the washer is as low to the floor as possible. When the
legs are screwed out too far the washer becomes wobbly. Often on the
metal style legs there are lock nuts that can be tightened to secure the legs so
they don't move on you. washers where really meant to sit on a cement floor, if
your washer is on a wooden floor look carefully at the strength of the floor. If
the floor is moving up and down when the washer is running, the floor may not be
strong enough to support the washers weight. Most main floor laundry rooms
floors are nailed down, the sub-floor is more secure if the sub-floor has been
screwed down. Sometimes extra support may have to be added under the flooring to
    add some strength

HAV2360 Maytag does not drain before spinning. Drain cycle seems not to engage.

Unlike Whirlpol and Kenmore washers Maytag Washers drain and spin at the same time.

Hello - we have a top loading Maytag Performa washing machine that leaks water during the spin cycle when my wife is washing heavy items that she has placed on center spindal to avoid an unbalanced load....

Maytag Epic is leaking water from the bottom about 8 or 9 inches from the front door back on the right side. Is there and thing i can do. It only about 2 years old or less.

Leak from maytag top load coin machine during spin drain cycle only

Possible that you would have a tub seal leak if it is only noticable during spin cycle. Possible that it "drips" slightly while in agitation, but not enough to notice it. While in spin mode you have a lot more parts moving as well as a lot more water pressure on the seal itself. Pump could also be leaking, but highly doubtful since it would leak a constant amount at all times. Good Luck!!! Jim
