You will need to open the set up page of the router. Do you have any computer connected to the router with the cable OR any computer able to go on line using the router ? If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router. Check the Ip address on that computer and using the default gateway number you can open the set up page. On this page you will find all the settings of the router.

How to set up password on my wireless router ?

The answer to this depends on WHICH password...... Router access, or wireless access. Run the install wizard from Edimax....but here are the highlights of what should be set:

Wireless Router

It is usually easiest to run the install wizard from the manufacturers' website, usually for free, but be sure to be ready to set the items listed below.

To get access, start your browser, and put or, or other address for your unit, into the ADDRESS bar (not search box) of your internet browser. Every unit has unique access login and passwords, some are admin with no password, some are admin and access information from the website of the manufacturer of your unit.

Things to set:

Note: Routers are intended to be set by geeks. You have to SAVE EVERY page before you leave it, or the changes will be lost. A geek knows this (apparently). The router gives no protest...just dumps your changes.

1. Login password (RECORD THIS!!). Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is not the security issue.

2. Set a recognizable system ID.

3. Invoke wireless security of at least WEP.

a. Assign your own access code, 10 digit home or cell #. Consider taping this information to bottom of the router. (Physical access is usually not the security issue.)

4. Check that your router is set to broadcast its' presence.

5. Change the channel of the wireless to 11, and avoid conflict with landline cordless phones. (Big issue, even the neighbors can interrupt).

There are more secure settings available, all the way down to only allowing certain MAC addresses to have access. A MAC address is a digit unique to each and every network card. Like a fingerprint. Most users do not set mac address limits

How do I access my router settings using the I set it up on another computer and always accessed it from there, Now I cannot access it from my laptop

you need to connect your laptop to the wireless router over wireless or wired connection and then access the page.

if you intend to change the settings, then its preferred that you have a wired connection to the router.

BTW, keep the routers admin password handy..

How do I secure my wireless connection?

The exact access and setting procedure can be found at Belkins web site.

Disconnect all cables to the router, then, in essence you connect to the router, usually via direct connection and direct your browser to the address specified (somthing like and log into the router. Things that you want to change are ssytem ID, router name, Router access password (RECORD IT!!!!) and set up wireless security. An easy access password would be your home phone or cell phone number. if you make a cryptic password, tape it to the router, as you will forget it when a guest visits and needs access.

Another setting to check is that your router broadcasts it's presence, usually set to yes, but not always, by default.

SAVE settings on EACH PAGE or they do not save, as you go from page to page changing settings.

What is a ssid# and where do i find it

Service set identifier, or SSID

Service set identifier, or SSID, is a name that identifies a particular 802.11 wireless LAN. A client device receives broadcast messages from all access points within range advertising their SSIDs. The client device can then either manually or automatically—based on configuration—select the network with which to associate. The SSID can be up to 32 characters long. As the SSID displays to users, it normally consists of human-readable characters. However, the standard does not require this. The SSID is defined as a sequence of 1–32 octets each of which may take any value.

It is legitimate for multiple access points to share the same SSID if they provide access to the same network as part of an extended service set.

Some wireless access points support broadcasting multiple SSIDs, allowing the creation of Virtual Access Points, partitioning a single physical access point into several virtual access points, each of which can have a different set of security and network settings. This is not yet part of the 802.11 standard

I used set up disk, set up SSID and added Key but laptop won't access SSID/router.

In order to access ther router wirelessly, you must first connect via cable to router. Using IE, go to and look in the Wireless section. Set the Network Name (SSID) you want - it can be almost anything you want - and after that you can choose what sort of Security you want to use, and set up your access passcode. Once this is all done, and access to Wireless is verified (using the passcode to access the SSID you chose) disconnect the cable. You now have control of router wirelessly.
