    my toro 22" mower shuts off when it moves. I have a new plug and gas. It runs fine just sitting there but when I push it it cuts off. I checked the cable connection and everything appears in order. I started it and lifted up the rear drive wheels, the wheels moved fine and it did not cut out, but if I shake it it cuts out. It sounds like it's not getting gas or something. should I take off the top and check the fuel lines?

    The mower cuts off at the slightest movement even when it moves even at a very slow pace. the blade area is free of grass.

    i still haven't fixed the problem with the mower. I finally got the top shield off and checked all of the fuel lines. None of the lines were clogged. I then drained the gas tank to see it there was anything blocking the flow of gas. The tank was clean and the screen was clean. It runs when I start it but the sceond I shake it or move it, it cuts off. I am determined to fix it myself because I cant afford to have it fixed

Hi,

Perhaps we can try process of elimination:

  • if it were a fuel delivery issue, engine would cough, sputter before eventually die;
  • if it were the sparkplug, it would not even start at all;
  • that would then leave us with the ignition/electrical.
Based on the assumption of an ignition/electrical issue, pls check:
  • high tension/sparkplug wire;
  • ignition coil and its connectors;
  • kill engine switch;
  • frayed wires, loose connectors, loose grounding.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    I would still suspect an electrical issue.

Yes check the gas line, follow it from the gas tank and make sure nothing is clogged. When running does it sound like it is about to die or is it running strong?

mower will stop running when it moves - reel-mower-5.gif Since the gears in a manual reel mower make the blades turn faster than the wheels, you don't have to run to keep the blade speed up. Still, the person pushing a manual reel mower supplies all the power, and a steady, reasonable pace is required to keep the reel spinning. Other than that, mowing the lawn with a reel mower is much like using a gas-powered push mower. Knowing what kind of grass you have and what mowing height and care that grass requires will help you to mow your lawn properly.

Taking care of reel mowers is easy. If properly cared for, reel mowers can last for decades. There are no oil changes or tune-ups required. The only steadfast rules for maintaining a reel mower are:

  • Clean the blades.
  • Wash off excess grass clippings.
  • Keep the mower out of the rain to prevent rusting.

    hi

    The teeth on helical gears are cut at an angle to the face of the gear. When two teeth on a helical gear system engage, the contact starts at one end of the tooth and gradually spreads as the gears rotate, until the two teeth are in full engagement.

    Figure 3. Helical gearsThis gradual engagement makes helical gears operate much more smoothly and quietly than spur gears. For this reason, helical gears are used in almost all car transmissions.
    Because of the angle of the teeth on helical gears, they create a thrust load on the gear when they mesh. Devices that use helical gears have bearings that can support this thrust load.
    One interesting thing about helical gears is that if the angles of the gear teeth are correct, they can be mounted on perpendicular shafts, adjusting the rotation angle by 90 degrees.

Check the connection of the wire to the switch, could be a cut wire or loose wiring on the unit.

Why does the mower have to be full throttle to start it, to make it move at all, and to stay running at all?

this could be a few things as to cause :

1- throttle cables stretch as they get older , if marking on throttle says "run" it might really be choke on carb - looking down carb body(air clean off) with engine off move throttle to choke the choke butterfly should shut off (choke does have small hole in it) the butterfly should not be just barely moving or half way it needs to be closed all the way
2- modern fuels leave deposits inside of carbs if machine is left to set for long times (weeks) these deposits don't just get washed away when the engine is started again either , they must be chemically or mechanically flushed away by either a carb cleaner (chemical) or taking carb apart and cleaning it totally out (inside and out) -these deposits cause poor carb performance and even non working engines
a method to keep from having to do this often , is to install a fuel shut off valve in the fuel tank ( might already have one there you just gotta look for it) and when your done with machine shut off the gas valve and allow it to run out of gas dry !

Hayward pool cleaner wont move

Make sure the feet have springs in place, move freely, and rubber not too worn. If that all looks ok, then probably too much suction pressure. Use gauge that came with unit to verify proper suction.
