Question about Escort Passport 8500 Radar Detector

1 Answer

Error Message? I had my Passport 8500 (NOT X50) for about 4 months when I noticed sometimes it would not work when I turned it on. Then one day, it was ALL the time. When I plug it in/turn the wheel to turn it on, it goes through it's usual diagnostics where it checks the different bands and everything. After a few seconds, it freaks out and says "ERROR" on the front. Is there a way to fix this? I know if I hold down both buttons it is supposed to reconfigure itself but that doesn't work either. Help me!!

Re: Error Message?

To reconfig the device you need to hold down all three buttons(not two)

Taking apart escort passport 8500?

I thought that the 8500 used Phillips head screws. If its not Phillips head, then possibly you need an appropriate sized Torx screwdriver.

Service Required means that your 8500 has repeatedly failed while attempting to calibrate its radar antenna. This can be fixed by Escort for free if your RD still is in warranty. There is a service fee if your RD is out of warranty, but at least Escort will fully test everything in addition to repairing your 8500, and they will upgrade your 8500's firmware to whatever their latest and greatest firmware is which may help to improve sensitivity, reduce false alerts, or to detect newer laser gun models.

8500 Alerts for no aparent reason

Got to the bottom of my false alarming situation. I finally called Escort and discussed the behavior with the technician who immediately concluded the antenna was failling and needed a repair. $30 worth of shipping and about a week later I got my repaired unit back and it works perfectly. Not sure the root cause but I am going to treat it as gently as possible and hope it keeps working, I sure like it better than the V1.

Continuous alert

About the only thing to try with the Escort 8500 and the x50 is to do a full reset. Hold all 3 buttons down while turning the detector on. I believe Escort will still work on it, there will just be a service charge with no warranty.

Escort, passport 8500

Hold all three buttons down at the same time to reset the device. If this doesn't work it probably needs to be sent back for repair/reflash. Jack
