Nakamichi Soundspace 12 DVD player not playing DVD's.

The Nakamichi Soundspace 12 display LCD screen indicates the DVD drive to be locked out with a KEY I-con. System menu displays the DVD drive to be unlocked. When a DVD is loaded in the drive, it will not play at all. I performed a lock reset as mentioned in the manual, and the problem still continues. What can be done to fix this problem?

It isn't a region code issue. The Key symbol shows that the drive has been locked in the menu, but the menu shows differently. It is as if the system needs to be reset, but that doesn't seem to help either. this seems exactly like a similar post earlier this week, but I could not download the solution.

  • jbole Nov 13, 2008

The reset proceedure does not work. The drive does not even spin, so the region code isn't even being read.

I have had three responses, but I can only see the last response. Is there a trick to seeing all three?

  • jbole Nov 18, 2008

Tried mmechanics solution and still no luck

  • jbole Nov 18, 2008

Nothing suggested so far has worked!!!!

There is a parental lock which can be set to several levels. It shows on the SETUP menu to be "OFF", but the password field is active and an icon showing a lock (on the MENU tab) is depressed. There is no way to change the lock level from "OFF", the cursor just skips over it.
The owners manual says that you can clear the lock and the password by pressing "CLEAR" for five seconds while in that menu tab.

When you press "CLEAR" and hold it for 5 seconds, it performs a "button lock" which is what it is supposed to do in any other mode. Holding again unlocks the buttons. Normally that is o.k. but in this mode it is supposed to clear that menu.

I would be happy to send it in for repair if anyone could recommend a repair shop that specializes in the SoundSpace series. Most Nak. shops wont touch a SoundSpace unit.

I would be happy if someone could find the solution to the post which was exactly the same as mine, just earlier.

Nakamichi finally responded through thier canadian distributor and singapore office. These proceedures worked. The fix is as follows:

    Update ?
The SoundSpace?12 has two unique software features that should be shared with our field team. The features
are described in detail below. Also, there is a correction to the owners manual.
    Feature #1 ?
Safety lock setting (Demo Mode Lock)
When the safety lock has been activated, no functions except power on/off can be carried out. This can be used
when the SoundSpace?12 is on a sales floor. It will prevent customers from tampering with the volume or from
removing discs from the disc drives.
    1) Press and hold the ?clear? button for at least 5 seconds. The indication ?Lock On? appears on the display of the
main unit, and no functions except power on/off can be carried out.
    - If a button is pressed in this condition, the indication ?Lock? is shown on the display.
    2) To disable the lock, press and hold the ?clear? button for at least 5 seconds. The lock is released and the
indication ?Lock Off? appears on the display of the main unit.
Note ? The ?clear? button is located under the flip-down door between the ?0/10? button and the ?Light on/off? switch.
Note ? This feature is listed on page 63 of the owner?s manual.
    Feature #2 ?
    RAM Clear 1
There are occasions when it is necessary to reset all features back to factory default. Perhaps the customer has
accidentally engaged the ?Viewing control level setting? feature (indicated by a ?key? icon on the display) and
forgotten the password. Or, perhaps a retailer has a SoundSpace?12 on display and all of the settings are
improper. RAM Clear 1 will accomplish the task of resetting the memory.
    1. CONFIRM NO DISC IS INSIDE
    2. TURN POWER OFF
    3. PRESS AND HOLD ?SELECT? AND ?DISC DOWN? KEYS SIMULTANEOUSLY
    FOR MORE THAN 7 SECONDS.
    4. ?RAM CLEAR 1? IS DISPLAYED, AND THE INITIALIZATION STARTS
    5. ?POWER OFF? IS DISPLAYED
    6. POWER IS TURNED OFF AUTOMATICALLY
    OPERATION
    7. RAM CLEAR 1 IS COMPLETE
    Owners Manual Correction -
    Canceling viewing control (page 54)
Incorrect: If you have forgotten the password, press and hold the Clear button for at least 5 seconds at the
PASSWORD screen. The parental lock is released and the key icon disappears from the display of the main unit.
Correct: If you have forgotten the password, press and hold the Enter button for at least 5 seconds at the
PASSWORD screen. The parental lock is released and the key icon disappears from the display of the main unit.
Note ? The remote has two Enter buttons. Press the ENTER button next to the number 1 key.

The address and phone number for DBI worked. I had called earlier, and got re-directed to a US service depot that did not work. On my second call, they sent an email to Singapore and I received a response overnight. The text of that response is attached in my comments.

You mentioned that it appears locked and you can not play the DVD, But also that it is NOT a region lock.

Some players have a feature that is marketed towards parents, which is called a parental lock.
Is it possible that this feature is on your player, and either accidentally or purposefully set?

If unsure get a DVD with a LOW rating (Something G rated, a kids movie perhaps) and try to play that in your player, If this does the trick for you then somehow the parental lock was set and will block anything rated above the locked level.

Hope you find this useful

I Don't know where you are located. So it is difficult to suggest a local repair facility. The companies corporate headquarters are in Singapor, Japan I am giving you that contact information. If you would like me to try to find something local for you, just give me a general idea of you location and I will try to find out for you.

Hi,

Initially, pls try:

  • unplug from the mains for an extended period of time, say an hour plus;
  • press the ON/OFF or standby button while plugging in the AC plug to the wall outlet.
Additionally, was there anything out of the ordinary prior to the issue? Power outages/interruptions, thunder storm, near lightning strike, anything noteworthy?

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa

Mar 14, 2008 | Nakamichi SOUNDSPACE 1 CD Player

1 Answer

Nakamichi SoundSpace 8 System

check your power cord, check your 9 prong relay cord from power amp to deck unit, check your fuse that is in a little slot in the plug itself, most importantly check the 9 prong plug to the control unit itself, if you are mounted on the wall it could easily come out enough to not make connection. these units will take alot of bad voltage errors, if the only thing not working is your cd player you should still be able to eject it, if not it is power related, if it will eject but not play then your drive band is broke and unless you are very very mech minded take it to a repair shop who is nach. refered just look online for service try my ideas 1st you might get lucky, I hope I am right!!

No - you can plug in external video using the SVideo input.. There are also a number of converters for similar situations. I have used one of these made for my Macintosh (It works just fine with the SS 8.5).
