The Thomson folks said to reset the phone. Here's how: unplug power, then the phone line, then remove the batteries. Wait 10-15 minutes. Replace the batteries, then the phone line and finally, the power.

Note: We have 2 phones with these two lines and had to reset both of them to clear the "busy" on Line 1.

Recording a Personal Greeting
Your answering system comes with a pre-recorded outgoing message or greeting that plays when you receive a call: “Hello, no one is available to take your call. Please leave a message after the tone.”
You can record your own personal outgoing greeting. Your recorded greeting must be between two seconds and thirty seconds long.

  1. Press /mute. The system announces the number of new and old messages, then starts to play themessages unless it has no messages.
  2. Press 5 to stop the announcements or message playback. You will hear intermittent beeps indicating that thesystem is in the command waiting mode.
  3. Press 8 to start the recording. The system announces, “Record greeting.” Begin recording after the announcement.
  4. When you finish recording, press 8 again or press 5. You will hear a confirmation tone, and your recordedgreeting plays back for you.
Selecting a Greeting
Once you have recorded a personal greeting, the phone automatically switches to your personal greeting. You can also switch back and forth between the pre-recorded greeting and your own greeting at any time.

  1. Press the Message icon (letter)/mute. The system announces the number of new and old messages, then starts to play the messages unless it has no messages.

That indicates that your machine is set to "Announce" mode where it plays an outgoing message but will not record incoming messages. If you want it to record incoming messages then you'll need to switch to "Answer" mode.
Since you declined to specify the model of your VTech 5.8GHz system I'm afraid I can't tell you how to switch modes. You can enter the model of your system into the search box here to download a copy of the manual.

I am trying to record my personal greeting on my message machine with the DECT 6.0...can you please explain to me how I can record my greetings?

Which model phone do you have? For the CL82509 and related DECT 6.0, you need to set the outgoing message from the handset when the answering machine is on. (It can be turned on from the handset).

For the outgoing message: with the handset in Idle mode, press Menu/Select. Use the up (Dir) and down (CID) arrows to highlight Ans Sys Setup. Then press Menu/Select. Use the same arrow keys to select Announcement and press Menu/Select again. Press 7 to record a new announcement. At the tone, speak your message clearly then press 5 when you have ended the message. The message will play back.

This model's manual is available here: http://att.vtp-media.com/ecp/documents/product_Product/132/UserManual/5995/cl82509_manual_USA_i6.pdf . See page 15 to set the answering system outgoing message. (This is different than Voicemail. To set up Voicemail, you will need to see your telephone provider's documentation.)

Most AT&T phone manuals are available here: http://telephones.att.com/att/index.cfm/product-support/manuals/ .

I hope this helps.

Base shows an A instead of 0 for mailbox.

You have your answering machine set to the announce mode, where it plays an outgoing announcement but does not record incoming messages. You need to switch it to the record mode. Since you declined to specify the model of your AT&T 5.8GHz system, I can't tell you how to do that. Please refer to the manual for instructions.

I cant find the manual and all I want to do is change the outgoing message?

Can you give the exact model of your Philips Answering machine? Usually, long press and hold the #4 button to record a new outgoing message after the beep.

Please let me know if this helps.

I can not get messages on my answering machine, it shows the letter a, can you tell me why?

Your machine is set to "Announce" instead of "Answer" mode. The announce mode merely plays an outgoing message but does not record any incoming messages.

Since you neglected to specify the model of your VTech 5.8GHz cordless system I can only suggest you enter it into the search box here to download a copy of the manual to learn how to switch modes.

Instructions for model 1188

Hi Diana - To record your outgoing message, hold down your ogm button ( outgoing message) for two seconds and it will ask you to record a message. To play back your message, just push the same button and it will play your message. If you don't like it just do it again. If this solves your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be happy to assist you further. Thanks and have a good day.
