restarted fine and was driven 10 miles into town. At no point during the drive was there any odd noises or loss of power, even at red lights. When I came back and tried to start the vehicle the RPM gauge showed a fluctuation from 700 to 1200 RPMs but I could drive the vehicle.

I parked at a neighboring parking lot and after a few minutes the vehicle died again and now will not start. The vehicle turns over and thinking it was a clogged fuel filter I replaced that. There was indeed a large deposit in the filter (never ran the truck out of gas, always ran it half a tank or more).

I also went ahead and replaced the spark plugs and wires. I'm getting a spark in the wires and the vehicle is strong in it's attempt to turn over but it's not starting. I removed the air filter to get to the throttle body and pumped the gas pedal a dozen times but there wasn't a strong fuel smell.

Fuel not getting to engine. Looks like a clogged line or fuel pump?

First you need to retrace your steps...before you changed the timing chain and gears did It run ok ? what was initial problem, next put a fuel pressure gauge on your fuel line and cycle your key on to run pos, dont have to try start, just run and see if you have fuel press during the 3 sec or so pump cycles, should be around i think 35-45 roughly for tbi. so if you have good fuel pressure , then you say you have good spark, then your problem is either ingition or valve timing, did your dist.come loose, did you properly install chain & gears and align timing marks. did you have somethine else a part on it too like intake, dist, ? get back with me I'll try to help you.

The initial problem was that it wasn't running smooth in idle... When I pulled the timing cover the chain had a lot of slack in it. Ill get back to you about the other things.

Does a 1996 Grand Cherokee Jeep have a timing belt or chain? And does either need changing?

That depends on which engine you have. Both 4.0 and V8 engines have a chain. The chain has no real time limit on how long it's good but from experience I've found that most, when well maintained will stretch to the point that they should be replaced at around 225 thousand miles.
Chain and gears are not super expensive and if you buy the best ones you can find, if you replace yours at 225-250 thousand miles the new one should outlast the vehicle.

I have a 1993 chevy suburban. i have been experiencing a loss of power when on an incline. there is even a rattling at times during acceleration. any suggestions

If you have over 70,000 miles on your vehicle and havent replaced the timing chain/belt yet, I could almost promise you that that is what your problem stems from.

Does the timing chain need to be replaced on a 1995 Chevy Astro?

Hello g_venegas,typically the timing chain should be replaced between 60 - 80,000 miles, of course the condition and how the vehicle was treated makes a big difference, so with 215,000 miles every day is a blessing regardless of how great shape the rest of it is, the big issue here is that if if fails during operation the repair cost will be considerably more than the timing chain, this of course is a decision you have to make. hope this helps you :) good luck

When to change timing belt on 1996 nissan maxima

Maximas had a timig belt until 1994. Some Maximas from 1992-1994 had chains also, but only the VE30DE models. All VG30 models had timing belt. Since 1995 all maximas (A32, A33, A34 the all new A35) have timing chains and the rarely/never fail. In fact in my 12+ years with nissan, I have't seen/replaced single timing chain in a Maxima, so pretty bullet proof setup and I have had few of those cars and have one right now. Awesome cars, by the way, just keep up with the oil changes and it will run forever. One of my Maximas had 245000 miles, when I was selling it and I still see it on the road here and there. BULLET PROOF engines.
