If your phone is "jailbroke" then you should be able to hook it into your computer and see what files your songs are. After this you may convert your mp3 files to the correct format. If your phone is not "jailbroke" then i would say that you will have to do with what the phone lets you do.

Your MP3 file may be too long in duration (try cutting it down to less than 10 seconds and try again), the file name may be too long (try renaming it on the desktop as ringmp3.mp3 and transfer to phone), or the MP3 may be recorded in a bit rate that is too high for the phone to support as a ringtone (transcode again to a lower bitrate).
I had to edit some of my songs on my PC to make them shorter to be applied as a ringtone. I made them about 20-30 seconds long so they would work. WHen I put entire songs on the phone it wouldn't work.
