Question about Dell PowerVault 110T LTO-2 Ultrium Tape Drive

1 Answer

The Error light is lit.

Error light blinks constantly and the Status light is on. I have cycled power on it several times and it still reverts to the same status. It does this with or without a tape inserted. Any ideas?

I have 15 of these, and have had this happen 3 times (2 of them in brand new servers).
The first thing to try is updating the firmware (you can download it from the Dell site).
If that does not fix it, the next step is replacement.
In the 3 times I had it happen, that was the fix (we tried a number of different things previous).
Seems there was a long series of these drives being bad, replacement was the only cure.

If it's out of warranty, you may want to try contacting Ultrium.

Sorry, not Ultrium (it's still early here) That should be an IBM unit. You can check this on the information tag on the unit.

If it is IBM made (which mine were) you can try contacting them.

Eject lto5

in the manual should be something like this:

Manually Removing a Tape Cartridge
If problem-determination procedures identify the tape drive as the source of the problem and you are unable to eject the tape cartridge using the eject button, reset the drive to recover the cartridge:
Press and hold the eject button for 10 seconds, then release.
The status light turns amber and the drive starts through its hardware test process.
When the hardware test completes, the status light turns green.
If a cartridge is in the drive the status light flashes green until the cartridge is rewound.
The status light turns solid green when the rewind is complete and the tape drive is ready.

Although it is from an older LTO version, it must work on the newer versions too.

I also did remove tapes, if nothing worked, but it is to much to tell and show here.
NOTE: Allow at least 10 minutes for the rewind process to complete.

Just want the error code lights on front.

They're both status and error indicators.

power down the computer and then the drive, disconnect the drive from the computer, and then power up the drive. If it still fails to eject, power down the drive again and this time power up while holding the eject button.

Why are the blinking of cleaning lights of tape drive HP Ultrium 448 Model No. DW017B

Use Library and Tape Tools (L&TT) to upgrade to the latest firmware
This is especially important if the problem with an Ultrium 215 or Ultrium 230 (LTO Generation 1). Outdated firmware in these models can often give load problems.
New revisions of firmware are released to fix issues that have been found since product launch. Some of these are firmware defects and some are additional functionality to deal with new drivers, server or application behavior etc. It is always recommended to ensure your drive has the latest released firmware from HP.
All firmware releases are tested thoroughly by HP and drives will only accept firmware that is intended for them - they will reject the wrong version - so don't worry, this is not a risky process.
Whenever you perform a firmware upgrade make absolutely sure that the upgrade process is complete before power-cycling the drive. If the drive is power-cycled while the upgrade process is still in operation the firmware could be corrupted resulting in a dead drive.
Ensure you have the most up-to-date drivers for your device.
If you do not already have L&TT click here to download
Click here for the L&TT FAQ. (www.hp.com/support/lttfaq) Look for How do I verify that my drive's firmware is up to date? in the contents.

I have a tape stuck in my drive and I can't eject it either on the hardware or using back up exec. The folloing lights are on Green power is on, orange status is on, and red error is flashing Any ideas how...

The only option for you is to remove the tape drive from your server, open it, and manually eject the tape that is stuck. This is not easy to do. Maybe it would be better if you remove the tape drive from the server and take it to a repair centre.

I think this sounds like the drive is having a issue loading and moving the tape in slot 1.
AIT units are known for having this kind of problem.
Try a cleaning tape and then a new tape fresh out the wrapper for a test backup.

if it fails with a known good tape then its time to send it out for repair

You are so impatient/ The problem with tape drives is the ferrous compound coming off the tape over time and building up- Each tape will need stripping and a good clean out with Coproponal Alchohol

Flashing lights

I had this issue and fortunately my tape drive was under warranty.

First off rang Dell and the technician tried fixing over the phone.

There are two types of flashing light (apparently) if the light is flashing slowly then the tape drive is telling you it needs cleaning, if the light is flashing fast then it is telling you that the tape (not drive) needs replacing.

The technician then said that if the tape drive was relatively new under 12 months then is was likely a software issue/conflict. My drive was nearly 3 years old, but he tried the software updates and restored the original defaults anyway and had no success, so they sent an engineer out.

When the engineer came out he replaced the drive immediately, i asked him what it was and he said when the drives get older or are used a lot they get clogged up with the metallic oxide ("DUST") from the tapes over time and they get to a point where they are so clogged they think they need cleaning all the time.

I asked if you could clean the tape heads yourself, he said you can but it is a real pain in the ***, so they don't, they just throw them away.

not much of a solution i know but this is whats happening, if your drive has done a fair bit of work then its a fair bet its knackered.

BTW: engineer did say you should only use good quality tapes as the cheaper ones give off more metallic oxide ("DUST") than the good ones.
