Windows vista desktop background not working - Computers & Internet

Helping out a friend so I don't know what was done to the computer. Its a Sony Vaio running Windows Vista. The desktop wallpaper is gone and all the desktop icons are missing. Have tried adding icons and file shortcuts to the desktop and changing the wallpaper: all unsuccessful. The control panel view to change Desktop Background only shows generic picture files, but I can see each picture if I right-click and preview. Found a setting in the registry by searching for HideIcons under Microsoft/Windows/Explorer/Advance that was set to 1 and changed it to 0, then rebooted. No luck. I hate Vista. Will keep looking for an answer.

My computer "freezes up" have Windows Vista

Vista isn't very good. Upgrading to 7 will probably fix it, but you could just use another browser. Instead of using Internet Explorer, download Mozilla Firefox for Windows Vista and try it. Seems to work a little better. Make SURE you periodically remove junk from your hard drive and defragment it, or this will happen too.

My desktop is only showing a strip of the picture. Everything else is fine. What can I do to restore my full picture on the desktop?

I'm guessing ur talking about background picture. Am i right?
In that case, you have to set your background picture, in order to fit the desktop. You can do it using left click on ur bakground and select Personalize -> desktop background, where you can find options "Fit To screen", "Tile" or "Center". Select "Fit To screen", then press ok. this should do it.
If you are using Vista as operating system. Before Vista, it varies where you can find the setting windows.

In Microsoft Windows Operating system close all windows and right click your mouse on the desktop. This will pull up a menu that includes an option "Properties" select that option and it will open a dialog that will let you change the background image.
Good luck

I want to change my desktop background. .what is the easiest and safest site to go to for reat pictures?

Right click your mouse on an empty area of the desktop. A small menu will appear.
  1. Click on Properties [This will be Personalize on Windows Vista or Windows 7] to open the Display Properties screen window.
  2. 3Select the Desktop tab, if using Windows XP. Windows 98 users can select the Background tab.
  3. 4Choose a background. On the lower left half of the Display Properties Window, you will see Background (Win XP) or Wallpaper (Win 98). You can choose a background from the long menu list by clicking on the background/wallpaper design you want.
  4. 5Select a position. Stretch is generally the best choice but if the image you have selected is of a low resolution or an aspect ratio different from your monitor's, then Center or Tile will work best.
  5. 6Click OK to close the Display Properties Window.

Hello,
If you are using windows XP then by right clicking on desktop you will be getting perperties in menu. Please go to properties and click desktop tab. In desktop you may select a picture and its layout (center, stretch or tile).
You can directly right click on a picture and can set it as a desktop background.
In windows 7 or Vista, on right clicking you will be getting personalize in the bottom of the menu and then on the left hand corner there will be change desktop.
Thanks

Try right clicking on the desk top... a menu will popup... click [personalize] then look for desktop background and pick a new one,,

This works on vista/win7

On windows XP go to start menu,, click on control panel...then display...then background.. pick a new one..
