You need a new bulb. It is a DLP lamp, part number 915P020010. You can buy just the bulb for $130 at dlplampexpress.com or the entire housing unit with the bulb already installed for about $368 on Amazon. The company who you purchase the bulb from will usually send directions on how to replace just the bulb or the entire housing unit. It is very easy.

This mite sound crazy but it is time to change the oil in your TV. Yes your TV has three seperate picture tubes on the inside of it. A red tube, blue tube, and green tube. Each one of thses tubes has a clear oil that the light shines through. Over time this oil gets cloudy and distorts the light thus dimming and fadeing your picture please have a tech change the oil in your tubes.
you are experiencing one or more of three things
1.the crt itself is damaged
2. the vertical ic on blue crt board is bad
3. the focus block is bad
if you hire a sony authorized technician they should be well aware of this problem.
The only thing I can think of that would make the picture fade to black is a loose solder joint on the filament supply. Each of the 3 picture tubes has a filament and if the 6.3 volt supply to those filaments is suddenly lost, the picture fades to black as the filaments cool down. An experienced tech can find and correct this for you quite easily.
