96 Dodge Runs fine but after warms up it dies, cools n will crank n run good then dies again after warming up.

I have a 96 Dodge Ram 1500. Cranks and runs fine but after it warms up it dies. After cooling cranks as if nothing is wrong til it warms up again then dies and wont crank until it cools. Talked with a friend that said a electronic computer module fixed theirs. On here I see numerous answers, fuel pump, icm, pressure relay, speed sensor, torque sensor, ect. Should I start by replacing the ecm that my friend said fixed his problem? Any help appreciated. Thanks

Hey Dennis,, DON"T BECOME A PARTS REPLACER..(some people who "call themselves mechanic's" are just that!),.. .take this Dodge to a qualified professional... talk to them..
You say warm... do you mean full running temp?? .if so, you may be experiencing a vapor lock,, fuel "boils" when the engine is hot.. when it cools its no longer hot enough to cause this..(S.W.A.G.)

Won't crank when warm

It is possible that the solenoid on the starter binds when the starter is hot. When you say that the starter was tested, was it tested hot?

Does the starter click when you attempt to start it? When you turn the key, the switch energises a small relay, which in turn energises the solenoid, which in turn applies power to the starter motor.
The solenoid should make an audible sound when it pulls in the plunger.

If you have a second person, one could turn the key, and another could gently hit the solenoid with a rubber or plastic hammer. This worked on a Dodge minivan that I had.

An image of the plunger is available at

I have a 96 Dodge Ram 1500. Cranks and runs fine but after it warms up it dies. After cooling off its as if nothing is wrong til it warms up again then dies and wont crank. Talked with one person that said...

I don't know what testing you have done? When it stalls if it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs, if spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also, check fuel injector pulse. If your missing all three, I usually check the cam and crank sensors. There could be other issues? Any applicable trouble codes?

1997 dodge 1500 starts fine when cold, won't restart when warm.

No, the coil the is not the problem. I would take the ignition module and have it tested. Even though it may not test bad b/c it is still cold, it is more than likely the problem. Have you checked to see if you are getting spark when the trouble occurs?

Yes the crank sensor can cause this problem, they go open when hot.
