Question about ASUS P5B-E Motherboard

P5B-E errors after XP re-install

I have a C2D system running on a P5B-E mobo.  The system has run without problems for 18 months with an ethernet connection to another home computer.  Recently I had a problem with the network and after trying many things {icluding updating mobo BIOS} the end result was that I formatted my XP partition and re-installed.

I have installed all the drivers etc from the ASUS mobo support cd as previously but now have two problems:

a.  Whenever I boot up, XP brings up the found new hardware dialogue and asks me to install an unknowm PCI device.  It shows in Device Manager as Other Device/PCI device with an error message and it has been inpossible to find what device the error refers to.

b.  I have two CD drives installed - a DVD RW and CD drive.  No problems before - now the system will only see one of these drives {and I have checked they both work.

The network problem has been resolved but I can see know way to resolve the two new problems other than removing the CMOS battery to clear the BIOS.

Vert grateful for any advice.

I would update the bios, uninstall the drivers for the ports, download the latest, and reboot. If the machine recognizes the ports, it will begin searching for drivers. Interrupt the search and manually install the drivers. If this does not good, I would reinstall the operating system. Also, use the drivers from ASUS...

Yes--most probably a memory error.
If you added memory and kept the original memory, they might not be compatible.
Try running with only the old memory.
Then try running with only the new memory.

Bet both work. But not together.

hmm, have you tried creating a virtual drive in linux to run xp through? if you do this, the virtual operating system (XP) will run in a window while you are running linux, when you are using the virtual operating system (XP) it will piggyback from the linux drivers and use the systems devices. check out the link it will explain it better

The problem - I guess - is that this CPU is not recognised correctly by the board. To solve it, just update to the latest BIOS, using either AsusUpdate or manually from www.asus.com

Sometimes my computer restarts suddenly.

this problem is due overheating, and you say yo have a C2D with this mobo.... at intel site it said that this mobo works fine with intel P4, Pentium Duo an Celeron but not C2D. Its true that you have 800Mhz FSB and it will detect the micropro.... and work fine but the C2D will overheat the mobo for its need of energy and overheat it so it start restarting. I dont know how much that mobo is going to last but start installing all cooler you can....the mission is to cool down that mobo and micro...
