If you registered your game when you did the original install, EA Support should be able to help you out, although they are notoriously slow to help their paying customers. This I know from personal experience, but, in all fairness, if you keep at them they will, as a rule, remedy the situation.
Just a sidenote: When you submit your support ticket, and start receiving emails from EA, save them and address your replies to the representitive who starts the process...It seemed to expedite the process for me when I had issues with NFS Carbon, NOT having to explain the issue to three or four different reps.
To find out what version of directx you have installed, go to your Start menu at the bottom left of the desktop, select Run, then type in dxdiag. Answer yes to the prompt, then you will be presented with your directx info.
DirectX 10 is not available for Windows XP, so 9 will have to do.
There are several problems that could be causing your game to crash. Incompatible video card, not enough ram, or a bad installation. Make sure your PC meets all the minimum requirements for the game, then try to uninstall and reinstall the game. If this is still an issue afterwards, either post back here for some more suggestions, or email the game publisher's support contact for assistance.
