Dell Inspiron 5150 won't boot

Hi,

When I try to boot my laptop, it starts to boot ok then a few seconds later it stops and I get a green flashing power light and an orange flashing battery light. Does anyone know what I need to do to fix it?

Thanks,
Steff

I get the lights whether the battery is in or not.

  • steffp01 Nov 11, 2008

If I try without the extra RAM, it no longer does the flashing lights thing, it just waits a couple of seconds and turns itself off.

I now get the same two flashing lights with no battery and no extra RAM installed (I've no idea how you access the RAM it came with).

Dell Latitude 100L won't boot. Green power light and yellow battery light blink nonstop. Tried different RAM, hard drive and have taken out the battery. Still just flashing lights and won't start up.

I have the same problem... I already take out ram, hard drive, battery, wireless card, and is still doing the same flashing lights...

Exact same - flashing green power and amber battery lights - no response in any other way.  Battery out doesnt do anything.

My 5150 won't boot either. When I push the power button, the fan starts to spin and the power light comes on solid green for a few seconds. Then, the fan goes off, and the power light just flashes green about every 3 seconds. If I push the power button, the power light goes solid green for a few seconds, then goes out. If I push the shift key while the power light is solid green (before it goes out), the fan comes on constant, the power light flashes green rapidly and the battery light flashes orange rapidly. When I create this situation with the shift key, the only way to turn off the laptop is to pull the power plug and take out the battery. Does this give any more clues to how to fix this problem?

If that's the only ram chip then you probably have a faulty ram chip. If you have an extra one than you can try it to see if it works. or borrow one from a friend.

Here is the ram your laptop should take. DDR2 - PC2100, PC2700, PC3200

You can buy that ram from (all below are links)
    future shop,
    best buy
    factory direct

    good luck

there should be a compartment on the bottom that snaps off or screws off.

Flashing cursor on inspiron 5150

I assume the power LED is on when you boot up the laptop and the power adapter is OK.
If I understand you, the RAM module is in memory slot A and not in slot B. If not the RAM module needs to be in slot A.
When a laptop doesn't the RAM module may only needs re-seating or the RAM module is faulty.
Re-seat the RAM module, and if this then take the RAM module and get it tested at your friendly computer shop.

DELL Inspiron 5150 isnt booting

If it doesn't respond at all with no ram or hdd, it is likely that the board is in fact dead.....sorry. When you say you found a broken pin, I assume you mean one of the contacts from the power jack to the main board had a cracked solder joint and you resoldered it. If this is the case, try disconnecting and reconnecting the connector from the lcd panel to the mainboard. It may just not be making contact. Also, if you boot up with the hd installed, do you see the hd activity led flashing like at a normal boot? If not, sounds like a dead board. Try pulling the optical drive too if you haven't already. Try connecting to an external monitor too.

Hope this helps!

Try pressing "esc". If it doesn't help call the dell technical support hotline. Or ask the shop.

i believed its not the mother board, check the system setting (press F2 when dell logo came out on screen) maybe the boot sequence is not configured right, try to set

First Boot: internal hard drive

and also remove any USB drive or floppy disk or CD inside optical drive or memory card connected to notebook before trying to boot the machine.

Hi rayo49,

Try booting in safemode. restart your computer and tap F8 repeatedly at boot up. select safemode and select windows xp.

If it does the same thing in safemode check the windows key on your keyboard. it may be stuck.
If it does not. try using system restore. start>all programs> accessories> system tools> system restore. rsetore computer to a few days back or before the problem begun

Screen goes blank soon after switching on

Try "Safe Mode" (holding F8 key on boot and selecting "Save Mode"), then run diagnostics and an up to date (virus definitions) Anti-Virus full scan.
If Safe Mode is not accessible then you may want to consider a format and clean install by booting to your Windows (?) CD.
