al four of my USB ports aren't working either. I have a Toshiba Satellite A135 as well. I was told that the driver software installed by windows updates isnot compatible with vista or my usbs. something like that. i don't know how to uninstall the driver..or rather i don't know whether it should be uninstalled or not.

dacphill, did you find a solution to your problem?

I have an a135 s2356 doing the same thing... I believe it may have first, and totally, happened after using a bad Ativa multi-card reader. I have tried at least 20 recommended fixes, updates, drivers, suspends, regedits, shutdown, uninstall, restack, bios usb disable/enable, disconnect power supply, and ANY device plugged into ANY usb port still returns "USB Device Not Recognized" and proceeds to attempt to install a driver for "Unknown Device" which then appears in the device manager but reveals that NO driver is present. If I then try to install a custom driver I get the message that "the most current driver is already installed" which is total BS.

There is power from the USB, as lights on different card readers, etc. light up. Most of my devices were previously used as "plug and play" on this comp and worked fine... now they are all unrecognized.

Is there a known issue of a corrupt file coming from a bad card reader?

I think until someone has actually cured this exact problem on a similar model, all the generic suggested solutions are worthless. Has ANYONE fixed this exact problem on a Toshiba A135?

All USB ports are not responding.

  • Anonymous Jan 02, 2009

pankaj_dic mentioned "this is the fault of your usb port, its a hardware problem, its better not to use that port, use a usb hub if you want more usb ports.

Now I'm not trying to flame you on your respons but what confuses me is that on this thread everyone has a Toshiba A135 series laptop with no operational usb ports. In other words, all 4 usb ports on their laptops are non-functional.

Now, I would like to know how you can manage to hook up a usb hub to a non-functioning usb port and end up with additional functional usb ports?????

In my case, anything I plug into any of the usb ports ends up with the operating system putting up a dialog box with the following message "USB Device Not Recognized". I'm sure everyone who has posted here is also getting the same symptom.

I agree in that this seems to be a hardware problem (all 4 usb ports non-functional) as re-installing an operating system does not cure the problem. If this is the case then the only options I can see is that you either live with this problem or try to get your laptop repaired which means a replacement of the logic/motherboard. This will cost $$$$.

Uninstalling/reinstalling device drivers for the usb ports via hardware manager also does not work. You try to insert a usb device and end up with "USB Device Not Recognized" again even after reinstalling drivers. Trying to update drivers does not work.

I then tried to update my BIOS but as my laptop has the current BIOS I cannot reinstall, or in this case, reflash my BIOS with a fresh install...

I am trying to be concise in my response/post. If I forget anything please feel free to respond. I'm sure everyone here is frustrated with this situation and don't look forward to thinking they have to either live with this problem or buy another laptop. If the latter then I would refrain from purchasing another Toshiba product. That's my two cents worth...anyway, anyone who might have a better recommendation or procedure to restore the usb ports are welcome. thanks and good luck.

Three things to try -
1 If you have more than 1 usb port try all of them.
2 Switch the laptop off and remove the battery for 30 minutes, replace and try again.
3. Try a different memory stick

My usb ports dont work in my toshiba satellite A135-S2386

Unplug the PCMCIA card first.
Then disable the onboard USB hub and ports. Shutdown, plug in the PCMCIA card and reboot into Windows.
Let Windows detect the card and if necessary put in the driver CD for the card. Had similar issues with my desktop PCI USB card.
After disabling the Onboard though it works perfectly fine now.

Hope this might help you a lot.
Good luck!

Please rate me if i a m helpful.
Thank you.
