In toshiba satellite a210 laptop, running vista. when card inserted nothing happens. went to device manager, checked- says all drivers up to date, device working properly. have tried with more than 1 card, of different makers- no go. happened after left card in drive for more than 1/2 hr; card go REALLY hot, but still works in camera.

This surely is a problem assosiated with your OS....sometimes when you are installing the OS, the components that are installed play a very important role..but when certain components aren't intalled properly, you face problems like these....so try re-installing the OS and your problem is definately fixed..!!

2.Remove the laptop Battery ( Close the Lid , turn
the laptop Up side down, search for a battery Lock tab, move it to Unlock
position, You can see a Lock/Unlock mark on the Laptop cover, this will eject
the battery from the slot.
carefully pullout the memory card from the card slot, utmost care should be
taken not to damage the card slot contacts
4.After taking out the cardput back the battery make sure that it is in
the locked position
5.Start the computer , try out the system
6.Verify the memory Card reader functionality
using a proper card as per the maker guidelines
Yes, these HC cards require a different reader, than traditional SD cards. The builtin one on the laptop probably doesn't support them, since any SD card above 2gb is technically considered an HC SD card. so my advice is to go to a cheap computer parts supplier, and see if they have a reader that will work for HC SD Cards.

Have you tried downloading the drivers for your SD card reader? You can obtain them for your laptop from the Toshiba download site here. Once you install the updated drivers, it will probably solve your problem. If not, leave a comment and I will try to help further.
