ARCHOS 605 30MB SLOW INTERNET SPEED and OPERA BROWSER CRASHING: Speed tests from show download speed less than 300Kb/s and up load speed is 127Kb/s, while an adjacent wireless laptop test shows 20,000 Kb/s and 1700Kb/s. I'm only a few feet away from the wireless "G" access point. End result is that the 605 takes a long time to load websites and often freezes up the Opera Web Browser. YouTube videos take a very long time to load and often freeze up the 605. It has to be turned off and back on to start over. I tried other speed test sites such as DSL Reports and speed test without success. The problem with the 605 seems to be inherent within the system that caps internet connection speed to 300 to 400Kb/s. 605 specs say that it connects to WiFi at 802.11g, which is 54Mbsp. 802.11b is 11Mbps. If Archos specs the 605 at G speeds, then why does the actual transfer rate measure at less then 300Kb/s, which is at the low end of 802.11b? If this is true and not a malfunction of my unit, then this is a major flaw and mis-representation of specifications from Archos. The feature of the Archos 605 internet access is useless at 300Kb/s since it is a waste of time waiting for websites to download. I'm finding, through internet searches, that slow internet access is a common complaint. I contacted Archos on this subject. The response was that the 605 has a slow processor therefore cannot process internet speeds faster. I was not happy with that answer because I was told that not to expect anymore than what I was experiencing. I'm not buying that response yet. I believe I was talking to a front end person and I did not request to elevate my question further into Archos, yet. Why does specs for the 605 state WiFi connection at "G"? The potential buyer will infer that the 605 will connect and utilize the transfer rates up to 802.11G rates. My next call to Archos would be to try to return the 605 directly to Archos due to specifications misrepresentation. I have had it too long to return locally and purchased four plug-ins and the DVR Station. I like all of the other features including the battery life, but I can't take the slow WiFi transfer rate. It is unacceptable! I would rather have a solution to the issue which would make the 605 internet useful, otherwise it's not for me. In comparison, the ITouch WiFi has a much faster internet response, but not measured. The Iphone using cell phone internet is more responsive than the 605 on WiFi-G. (3G internet speeds is in the 3Mbps and WiFi-G is 54Mbps.) Is there a fix that will speed up the 605 internet access? I want to bring this fatal problem to all who are experiencing the same problem and maybe hopefully cause a rush of inquires into Archos on the speed issue. I would like to know if any owners test out faster inernet speeds at Please post results for all of us to review. Thanks NB

Same deal with 605 4GB - I can stand the Archos 605 on top of the router, and still get lousy wireless performance. Archos are being very disingenous marketing the device as 'G' compatible when it appears it it has been deliberately designed not to achieve it. Archos support is also lousy - generally seem content to shrug their shoulders at the earliest opportunity, instead of taking a genuine interest in user experience

I've been experiencing the same problem, after waiting endlessly for video to download it will play fine. Problem is the wait is painful, as other users have found Archos could care less. Once they've got your money they seem content to dump you and your problems. Solution - admit you've been screwed by another over hyped technology, throw this POS in the trash and become and Apple user, thanks for nothing Archos.

Yes, we were gypped. I don't understand all those great reviews either. I bought it mainly for wi fi at my work, but my wife's iPod touch works much better. The terrible connectivity and painful browsing is unacceptable.

I have a 605 4GB, and it is slow as molasses. The problem folks, is that 802.11 G is a connection specification, not a speed garantee. The method of connection and transmission allows up to 54GBs of speed over the G connection. But you can still have a G connection and be recieving data at 128KBPS! If you don't belive Archos, try and connect to an open G - only network, and you should be able to connect. The processor in the device is very limited, and THAT is what makes the device slow. If someone would create a web browser with lower overhead, it could be sped up, but as there are so many platforms to write for out there, don't count on it. Open up the platform and let the open source world fix this, Archos!

What is happening with AOL? I have been having lots of pop ups, slow computer and AOL telling me they are having problems? My computer very slow?

Is you computer slow when using software offline? If so, it is either AOL or your internet. Don't judge the speed strictly by going to AOL. Go to Speakeasy Speed Test and test your internet speed. If that shows your internet is running at the speed you are paying for, it si AOL having trouble. You don't say which browser you are using, but most browsers have an option to block pop-ups. Make sure it is on.
Run a virus scan on your PC to see if it is infected. Also defrag your hard drive to speed it up some.

Very slow download

What is your internet provider speed agreement? some people have 1 mb down or less, some have 10 and some have 60 or more. I am currently with FIOS at 60 MPS.

to check your download speed go to:
select a city and check your download speed from at least 3 different cities. If it seems that everything is ok there, you might be downloading from a site with too many people logged in on it or the web site has a restricted download to allow many people to access file at the same time.
If speak easy find a problem in your cable modem, you can be having problem with cable outside the house, 2 years ago, my cable was hit by lightning and it had to be changed 3 times, in this case you might need to call your internet provider

Internet connection slow, how do I speed up my service.

Have you tested your service and compared the readings based on the service you are paying for? You should test with a direct connection (no router) to your PC and then test again with the router in place. Try as a test site. You can also try as another test site with a little less graphics load. If your bandwidth is less than advertised (expect the actual to be about 25-30 percent under the advertised) then contact your service provider to see if they offer faster service

I have my router hooked up to my internet in my dorm at college, my signal is 100% but the speed varies from really slow to fast, how can i fix this

Do a quick speed test. There's a couple of websites out there but try Scroll to bottom of screen you should see a speed test icon.Pick the server closest to your physical address then click. This will give you a close approximation of what your speed is. Compare this number to what you pay for from your internet service provider. A computer speed is affected by numerous things. The RAM( memory) 4gb is optimum by today's standard. Second the amount of toolbars active on your web browser. Also clear temporary internet files regularly and browsing history on a regular basis, this greatly affects your speed. Last but not least, the websites that you access sometimes has it's own server issues. The internet is a two way communication, the party on the other end might have issues that affect your speed. Good luck

Slow internet

90kbps is a little slow. You should be getting closer to 175-200kbps. You have to remember also that the ISP only states that the speeds are "up to 1.5mbps", so that could mean that you get less than that.

I would try and run a speed test. Go to and run a speed test. If you're getting an optimal connection you should get results for download at 1300+ kbps. If it's much less than this I would restart your networking equipment one time and test again. If there is no change I would contact ATT and have them test the lines.

Hope this helps.

Download's speed

Speakeasy — Speed Test Test your internet connection speed!go to:
Speed Test — About Broadband Speed Here's some information to help you understand your results. There are a lot of things that factor into your speed test results. Download and upload speeds, backbones, networks, latency, ping times, and DNS servers.
Download is a measure of how fast your connection delivers content to your computer or local area network.
Upload is the measure of how fast content is delivered from your computer or local area network to others on the Internet.
To achieve optimal delivery of T1 or SDSL services, download and upload speed should match or at least be very close. This is very important for applications like VoIP, email, on-line gaming and other interactive programs. Upload speed is even more important if you are operating an email, web or file server at your location.
Kbps transfer rate = kilobit per second transfer rate. There are 8 bits in a byte, so we would divide kbps by 8 to get KB/sec transfer rate.
