Question about MP3 & Digital Media Players

ARCHOS 605 30MB SLOW INTERNET SPEED and OPERA BROWSER CRASHING: Speed tests from Speakeasy.net show download speed less than 300Kb/s and up load speed is 127Kb/s, while an adjacent wireless laptop test shows 20,000 Kb/s and 1700Kb/s. I'm only a few feet away from the wireless "G" access point. End result is that the 605 takes a long time to load websites and often freezes up the Opera Web Browser. YouTube videos take a very long time to load and often freeze up the 605. It has to be turned off and back on to start over. I tried other speed test sites such as DSL Reports and Verizon.net speed test without success. The problem with the 605 seems to be inherent within the system that caps internet connection speed to 300 to 400Kb/s. 605 specs say that it connects to WiFi at 802.11g, which is 54Mbsp. 802.11b is 11Mbps. If Archos specs the 605 at G speeds, then why does the actual transfer rate measure at less then 300Kb/s, which is at the low end of 802.11b? If this is true and not a malfunction of my unit, then this is a major flaw and mis-representation of specifications from Archos. The feature of the Archos 605 internet access is useless at 300Kb/s since it is a waste of time waiting for websites to download. I'm finding, through internet searches, that slow internet access is a common complaint. I contacted Archos on this subject. The response was that the 605 has a slow processor therefore cannot process internet speeds faster. I was not happy with that answer because I was told that not to expect anymore than what I was experiencing. I'm not buying that response yet. I believe I was talking to a front end person and I did not request to elevate my question further into Archos, yet. Why does specs for the 605 state WiFi connection at "G"? The potential buyer will infer that the 605 will connect and utilize the transfer rates up to 802.11G rates. My next call to Archos would be to try to return the 605 directly to Archos due to specifications misrepresentation. I have had it too long to return locally and purchased four plug-ins and the DVR Station. I like all of the other features including the battery life, but I can't take the slow WiFi transfer rate. It is unacceptable! I would rather have a solution to the issue which would make the 605 internet useful, otherwise it's not for me. In comparison, the ITouch WiFi has a much faster internet response, but not measured. The Iphone using cell phone internet is more responsive than the 605 on WiFi-G. (3G internet speeds is in the 3Mbps and WiFi-G is 54Mbps.) Is there a fix that will speed up the 605 internet access? I want to bring this fatal problem to all who are experiencing the same problem and maybe hopefully cause a rush of inquires into Archos on the speed issue. I would like to know if any owners test out faster inernet speeds at www.speakeasy.net. Please post results for all of us to review. Thanks NB

Same deal with 605 4GB - I can stand the Archos 605 on top of the router, and still get lousy wireless performance. Archos are being very disingenous marketing the device as 'G' compatible when it appears it it has been deliberately designed not to achieve it. Archos support is also lousy - generally seem content to shrug their shoulders at the earliest opportunity, instead of taking a genuine interest in user experience

I've been experiencing the same problem, after waiting endlessly for video to download it will play fine. Problem is the wait is painful, as other users have found Archos could care less. Once they've got your money they seem content to dump you and your problems. Solution - admit you've been screwed by another over hyped technology, throw this POS in the trash and become and Apple user, thanks for nothing Archos.

Yes, we were gypped. I don't understand all those great reviews either. I bought it mainly for wi fi at my work, but my wife's iPod touch works much better. The terrible connectivity and painful browsing is unacceptable.

I have a 605 4GB, and it is slow as molasses. The problem folks, is that 802.11 G is a connection specification, not a speed garantee. The method of connection and transmission allows up to 54GBs of speed over the G connection. But you can still have a G connection and be recieving data at 128KBPS! If you don't belive Archos, try and connect to an open G - only network, and you should be able to connect. The processor in the device is very limited, and THAT is what makes the device slow. If someone would create a web browser with lower overhead, it could be sped up, but as there are so many platforms to write for out there, don't count on it. Open up the platform and let the open source world fix this, Archos!

Lost my manul for archos jukebox recorder 20 mp3 player/recorder & data storage

Go to the RockBox software site. RockBox is provided freely by an end-user created and supported group and is a wonderfully evolved software replacement for quite a few portable music-playing machines. Your Archos Jukebox recorder is long out of warranty, so there's NO downside in updating it by installing the most current version of RockBox. That will greatly extend the capabilities of your machine.

Then download the RockBox user Manual! That will be your new Archos JukeBox Recorder User Manual. You'll be able to select what you hear by one of two control strategies: File names or by Playlists. You'll be able to adjust playback sound in new and more powerful ways than just using the equalizer. Also it will allow you to control playback "pitch" or speed, so you can hear lectures or books at a higher playback speed. Human retention actually improves when playback speed is increased some. You can print out the RockBox pdf. format manual if you'd like or you can study it on line. Lots of choices.

Good luck with your "obsolete" Archos JukeBox. I actually prefer the earlier models which were powered by four rechargeable AA cells rather than those with the replaceable lithium battery. I know someone who ran one of these continually for more than a year to provide background music, plugged into a wall-wart charger and his sound system. Durable!

What type of browser does the archos 7 have? I know it is not windows internet explorer like on my laptop.

Archos uses Opera as the web browser - you may need to download the plug-in from the Archos site. Here is a link for a general review of several browsers including Opera http://www.yourhtmlsource.com/starthere/browserreview.html

GPRS activition for free

fooling Airtel - FREE gprs, mms, airtel live, more  lets start from free gprs via airtel live  pls note this trick works only on mobile with multi channel support  it was not found by me .
u need a PC or a Laptop and the required connectivity tools ,ie.,  Serial/USB cable OR Infrared Device OR Bluetooth dongle
1) Activate Airtel Live! ( It's FREE so no probs)
2) Create 1 Airtel gprs data accounts and select the  FIRST as the active profile.  CODE  Under DATA COMM  ~~~~~~~~~~~~  GATEWAY : 100.1.200.99  APN : airtelfun.com
USERNAME : blank
PASSWORD : blank
PASS REQ : OFF
ALLOW CALLS : AUTOMATIC
IPADDRESS :100.1.200.99
DNSADDRESS 1 : 202.56.230.5  DNSADDRESS 2 : 202.56.240.5
DATA COMP : OFF
HEADER COMP : OFF

Under INTERNET PROFILES  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERNET MODE : HTTP or WAP (both works)
USE PROXY : YES
IP ADDRESS : 100.1.200.99
PORT : 8080
USERNAME :
PASSWORD :
3) Connect your mobile to the PC (or Laptop) and install the driver for  your mobile's modem.
4) Create a new dial-up connection using the NEW CONNECTION  WIZARD as follows
Connecting Device : Your mobile's modem  ISP Name : Airtel (or anything you like)  Phone Number : *99***1#  Username and Password : blank
5) Configure your browser and download manager to use the proxy  100.1.200.99 and port 8080.( My advice is to use Opera since you  can browse both wap and regular websites)
6) Connect to the dial-up account. You will be connected at 115.2  kbps (NOTE* 115.2 KBPS IS A SPEED BETWEEN UR PC AND PHONE ).
7) Pick up your mobile and try to access any site. You will get "Access  Denied."(except for Airtel Live!). IT DOES NOT MATTER.  Keep the mobile down.
8 ) On the PC ( or Laptop) open your browser, enter any address ,  press ENTER and.WAIT
9) After a few seconds the page will start to load and you have the  WHOLE internet at your disposal.
[quote] pls Note If u are getting any error wile dialing a dial up connection than go to  Control panel>> Phone and modem>>>select modem and click on its properties >>advanced
cntd  and enter the following initialization commands  CODEAT+CGDCONT=1, "IP","airtelfun.com","",0,0  and click on ok now connect to gprs it will be connected without any error
to improve the speed  go to run and type  ping -t 100.1.200.99  and pres enter  and minimize the window it will improve the speed delete
airtel live @ free  airtel live @ free

I can't download anything

1. You need to connect to the Internet. The easist way to do this is find an open wireless connection, like at a cafe or at someone's home whom you know.

2. Once you know you're in range of a connection, click on the Portal or the Web icon on the display.

3. When you click on the Web icon, you may be asked to buy the Opera browser to surf the internet. I never was able to buy the browser using my 605, even after registering it online. I used my PC to buy the plug-in online and then downloaded it to the 605 using the USB connection. Follow the instructions after you buy the Opera browser from Archos's web site -- they were clear and simple on how to install the Opera browser onto the device.

4. If you instead choose to click on the Portal icon, you will then see the 605 display some boxes indicating it has detected some wireless connection(s) and then it asks you if you want to see the list of connection(s). View the list and choose the connection you want to connect to. (Note: If you've downloaded and installed the Opera browser, you will see this message, too; if you haven't, you will see the screen that has a button you can click to "buy it now." As I said, I never got that to work -- and I tried a few different connections.)

5. ONce you've chosen a connection, if it is password protected, the 605 will ask you for the password. Enter it using the keyboard that will pop up. If it is not password protected, you should be able to jump on the connection.

6. Then, if you clicked the Portal icon, you'll see some buttons to press to view content. Free stuff to choose from, some of it is good.

That's it. Anyone else chime in with corrections and clarifications!
