My 2 yr.old jammed 2 disc's into my 11 yr.olds PS3 and now it won't read a disc. Sony won't cover it and my husband and I decided to take the disc drive apart and we found a key like thing just laying in there near the eye on the magnetic thing. We don't know where this goes and we are pretty sure thats why of course the disc cannot be read. Can you help me with this problem ? Sony wants $150 plus S & H to fix it.
PS3 is The amazing device by sony but it has some common problems like Disc read error, unreadable disc etc.... Good news is that these all problems can be repaired with the help of DIY Guides, one such guide available at PS3 Repair Blog.

Same problem here, your only option is to send it in to sony. I'm about to click submit with my card information to pay the fee. Mine reads everything but blu ray games and movies. If yours is over a year old it's probably out of warranty like mine unless you bought the extended warranty. For you crlnmcgrth, i would check and see if you can find out when you bought yours exactly. If you are still under warranty sony will fix it for free or send you another system identical to yours for free. Call 1-800-345-sony. They open at 9 am est or 6 pst. Hope this helps.
sony jst ripped us off with ps2. u know, always making something not perfect so they could sell a better product, does ps3 sound familiar. im sure something will be similar to ps3, then ps4 comes out, so on and so forth. mostly, i cant play rockstar games in my ps2, the video and audio doesnt match, then it jst freezes on loading scenes. jeeze.
There is a common problem with the Blue-Ray players in the PS3. There is not anything that i know of that you can do other than have your PS3 worked on
**Warning** If you have the old 80 or 60 gig ps3 that you are able to play PS2 games on and you are trying to go through sony for repair they may just give you a new 80 gig ps3 in which you will not be able to play PS2 games on any more that feature has been taken away

This is a common problem so it should be a quick fix. But, depending on how many repairs the shop you are sending it to has will ultimately decide how long it will be there. Sorry to say but you may be looking at 4-6 weeks.
Hey, i bought a ps3 almost 2 years ago now, its been more reliable for me than my old ps2. i would try and phone them again if you aint recieved the case soon,
it does sometimes take a while for them to repair it and send it back ie if its the same console, they might just swap it for another ie once u get it sent away :-).
sounds like a problem with the laser, im sure you will see the case soon, and touch wood have no problems with the replacement ps3.
