Your keyboard may be bad and that is why you aren't able to type an F. Also, as soon as you turn the computer on you should be able to get into the bios by pushing F2, or whatever the splash screen says (Usually F2). Once you get into the bios (don't get intimidated, use your arrow keys to navigate, and usually enter to select something, etc etc)just have a look around to see if you can Boot Priority List or something of that nature. Once you are into the list, set boot from cd/dvd as your first priority to boot from. Save and exit the bios. Insert your recovery disc and restart the computer. It should work now and follow the directions on the disc. Pick non-destructive recovery and follow that through. After that it should work. Good Luck

Advent 7084. Tried to change back to XP from Win7. Reformatted HD but install did not complete. Now machine will not run after Intel splash screen. I have tried pressing F10 repeatedly after switching on....

Did you use the Advent's built-in reformat and rebuild to get it back to XP Pro?

If you have a separate XP Pro CD or DVD, as opposed to that in a 'hidden' partition on the HD, your best best, so long as you have the installation key, is to start fresh with formatting the HD and, if it is large enough, splitting the HD into two partitions.

Then use one of them for the actual XP Pro partition. Build that first partition into XP Pro, and when it is working properly, only then do you format the second partition, and make it into the kind of space you need it to be.

You should have the ability to make it work now. So long as you have a legitimate installation key for XP Pro, you should be able to make this work properly.

I have a advent notebook which wont turn on and sais that an error accured whilst trying to load configuration settings?????

You may have to contact Advent to try to get a recovery CD - however, there are a few things to try.

1) Try booting the system into SafeMode. To do this, as soon as you turn the system on, tap the F8 key und you will get to the Startup Option screen. Use the arrow keys to highlight SafeMode and press 'Enter'. This will either work or it won't and it may freeze with the error. IMPORTANT: Write down the error - we may be able to find a workaround with that information.

2) If you cannot get to SafeMode, reboot the system and follow the same process to get to the Stoartup Option screen. This time select SafeMode with msdos prompt. If you can get there, we can possibly run a System Restore in DOS and turn your system back to before you had the issue.

Let me know how you make out and we'll move on to the next step.

Good luck,

Acer 1360 black screen cant get start menu

If you are getting a Blue screen repeatedly and you can't start up to windows in any custom setting ( from f8 start up menu ) one way to solve the problem is to Use the restore disc or windows installation cd or dvd to install windows into the computer or perform a repair installation if a windows already exists on the computer and the setup can find it.

how to perform a repair installation

this is for xp, but its similar on 2000 and on vista.

insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

if not then the computer is not set to start up from a cd, you can either enter the setup / bios to change that setting OR right when you power up the computer look at the screen it will say what button to press in order to enter boot menu or bios, it will very likely be button F12 or similar, it should say on the screen when you power on.

if it doesn't, then you need to go into the bios and change the boot order so that the computer starts from the CD first.

after that you should be able to start from the cd and install the OS (Operating system, eg.Windows)

here's some info on how to work the bios: http://www.whitecanyon.com/how-to-change-boot-order.php

Repeat step 1 when you have changed the boot order.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

7.Ones windows is working you will need the drivers for your computer, they are at the makers website, for hp and compaq. www.hp.com for acer http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html for all other brands go to google and write Brand drivers. Should get you to the right place. Dell is most likely www.dell.com and so on.
