Check the jumper settings on the hd one has to be a master for operating system and the rest has to be the slave drives .... sometime certain hd's may work under cable select and make sure cables are seated correctly and no bent pins jumper needs to have a snug fit use a toothpick to remove or bend pins straight..

Diagnostic lights

I know this is old, but I think maybe I can help someone who is having a similar issue. I assume they were using some kind of IDE to SATA convertor from the motherboard header (the place where it plugs in on the motherboard) or an SATA to IDE convertor on the drive itself. It is probably not working or the mainboard can't support it. Here is the answer from the manual referring to the diagnostic LEDs:

  1. Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the system board from the hard drive, CD drive, and DVD drive.
  2. If there is an error message on your screen identifying a problem with a device (such as the floppy drive or hard drive), check the device to make sure it is functioning properly.
  3. The operating system is attempting to boot from a device (such as the floppy drive or hard drive); check system setup to make sure that the boot sequence is correct for the devices installed on your computer.
  4. If the problem persists, see "Contacting Dell" in your Owner's Manual for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.
These convertors are pretty straight forward. It's probably better to get an internal PCI SATA card and hook to that. There are a couple of advantages to a SATA card--

  1. They can support the rated speed of the drive. If you have a SATA 3.0 drive (6Mb/sec) and you have a card that supports it, it should run nearly that fast.
  2. They usually support hardware RAID for more drives.
  3. They usually have eSATA ports and maybe USB as well.

As long you have the drivers to support it, it should be better.

Should the sata cable be hooked up to the cd drive or the hard drive and where can i find pictures of where the inside cables should be attached to

Hi,
One end of the Sata Cable is to be attached to the CD/DVD (Optical Drive) or Hard Disk, whereas the other end is to be attached to the motherboard. The Sata connections on the motherboard are located near the CMOS/RTC Battery as indicated below: - (Blue, White, Yellow and Black, at right-hand top corner)

I have HP Comaq Presario SR1617CL Desktop PC, part number ED870AA with a Samsung SpinPoint P80 SP1604N - hard drive - 160 GB - ATA-133, I would like to upgrade to a 500GB hard drive. I have a ASUS A8AE-LE...

XP cannot be installed natively on an SATA disk without the appropriate driver which must be loaded during the install - an extremely complicated maneuver. The best way to deal with that is to just add the new SATA hard disk: install XP on the PATA and use the new SATA for your files as a separate partition. The adapter cable can be bought for about $5 from the same shop as the hdd.
All the other modifications are just fine - just remember , the RAM will not be fully recognized and used because of the limitations of the 32bit XP.

How do i find my hp compact ,the model # to look for the manuel for my comp, i have a hard drive i guess it's a new type and i want to add another hard drive but it's the old conection, what i can do ,,

I assume you new hard drive is a SATA hard drive and your HP only has an IDE hard drive.
To install a SATA hard drive in the HP, you will need to install a SATA controller card in your HP so the SATA hard drive can work in the HP computer. You will also need a power adapter lead for the SATA hard that converts the 4 pin power connector to a SATA power connector.

I want to install a CD/DVD RW drive. This is in addition to the installed CD/DVD already in place. The new drive has a SATA connection on the back, and the only available connector is an IDE connector....

There are IDE to SATA adapters and cables, such as this one linked below. IDE to SATA Adapter
You would simply plug this adapter into the available IDE connection on your motherboard, then use the SATA data and power cable to connect from the adapter to the CD/DVD drive. You can look around online for similar products, but they should get the job done!

How to install 2 t hard drive in computer compaq

A 2Tb hard disk will be a SATA hard drive. If your PC Desktop does not have a SATA disk controller then your have a couple of options.

1. Insert a SATA controller card into the PCI expansion slot, mount the SATA hard drive inside the PC case and then connect the SATA hard drive to the controller (you will also need a 4 pin power to SATA adapter cable) and install the SATA controller driver.

2. The other option (and the easiest) is to purchase an external USB 2Tb hard drive. All you need to do is, plug it into the USB port of your computer and it will see it as an external storage device.

How do I install a new CD drive in an old destop computer It is an old Compaq Presario 5WV254 The existing CD drive has a ribbon type connector that mates up to the pins on the drive plus a 4 pin module...

The Compaq Presario SWV254 Desktop PC uses IDE technology, not SATA.
In the specifications for the above Desktop PC, it states ATAPI is used for the interface technology, and connector, for the optical drive/s.

[IDE is also referred to as PATA. Parallel ATA
SATA is Serial ATA.
The PATA designation was implemented, so that computer users could easily distinct between IDE, and SATA technology]

1) The IDE interface cable, (Flat ribbon cable), has a connector on each end with 40 socket holes.
(39 are actually used. Most of the time, one socket hole is blocked off. (Pin 32)

2) The SATA interface cable has 7 contact pins. Also referred to as a Data cable.

3) The IDE devices, (Harddrive and optical drive), use a 4-pin Molex connector for the power cable.

4) The SATA devices use a 15-pin connector on the end of the power cable.

More info on SATA,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SATA

The Samsung SH223C optical drive is a SATA device.
You cannot just plug it in.

IF, you have an open, (Available), PCI slot on the motherboard, you can use a SATA adapter card.
The SATA adapter card plugs into the PCI slot, and has the necessary connections on the card, for a SATA interface cable.

(NOTE*
Just for the SATA interface cable. Does not have a connection for the SATA power cable, you need.

You have to buy a 4-pin Molex to SATA power cable adapter, and connect it to an available 4-pin Molex power cable, on your power supply.

You will also need a SATA data cable. The interface cable that goes from the SATA adapter card, to the SATA optical drive you're trying to install)

This is an example of a SATA adapter card. It is not an advertisement for said website, nor manufacturer,

Install hard-drive

Sata drives don't have an option to be master/slave like IDE drives, b/c the Sata cable is per device. If the computer's not pulling up the sata drive, open device manager (right click  my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager) and look for a yellow question mark. You'll have to install drivers for it more than likely.
