External harddrive (MyBook) not recognize

My external harddrive is suddenly not recognized by my computer. It is stating that it needs to be formatted. I don't want to format it as I have data on it I don't want to lose.

Okay, here is what you can do to just verify that you haven't lost all the data on the hard drive (HDD failure, due to the manufacturer or a drop or heavy shake). Download a copy of Slax Linux www.slax.org 32 bit version will work, and burn the ISO they give you to a CD. I would recommend using Alcohol 120 www.alchoholsoft.com. Boot in Slax, and see if you can get the computer to recognize the HDD. If so, backup your important data onto other hard drives or thumb drives. Then when you have enough data backed up, you can format the hard drive.

Now, to get really fancy, lets say you have a somewhat corrupt formatted hard drive, and enough data free to encompass the data you have on the hard drive. Well, what you can do is download a program called "partition magic" and do a partial non-destructive re-partition. Respond if you need to get to that point so I can get you a link to the program.

My WD Book was spinning and clicking constantly, so i unplugged the USB and the power source from my laptop. After plugging back in, it is no longer recognized on My Computer -- I've rebooted 2x. My...

Let's hope the spinning and clicking was caused by a bad circuit board in the WD Book, and not the Harddrive inside it.

To explain;
Inside the plastic external enclosure (Case) of the WD MyBook is an ordinary harddrive as used in a laptop, or desktop computer.

There is a small circuit board inside the case, that the harddrive plugs into. (Or there are wires from the small circuit board, to the harddrive)

The other end of the circuit board, has a USB cable attached to it.
The circuit board is an Interface Board.

It is this small interface circuit board that USUALLY goes out.
Harddrives are pretty tough, but they are a mechanical device, and are rated in hours of usage. They can fail.

What I would suggest is to buy an economical external enclosure.
Has the circuit board, USB cable, and everything needed, just needs the Harddrive.

Installing is easy. There are instructions included.

Now we come to the technical portion.
What size harddrive is it, and what technology does it use?

Size:
1) There are two sizes of Harddrives. They are measured across the Width.

A 2.5 inch harddrive is a laptop size harddrive.
(2 and a half inches across in width)

A 3.5 inch harddrive is a desktop size harddrive.

Once you open the WD MyBook case, and measure, you will know.
Pretty easy.
Technology:
Looking at the harddrives label, will tell you if it is an IDE (PATA) model, or a SATA model.

If no nomenclature is readily apparent looking at the label, there will be a model number on the label.
Put the model number in your search bar.

Example:
WD2500BEVT

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136387

250GB SATA harddrive. Also is a laptop size harddrive.
(2.5)

If you cannot find the information, just post the Model Number in a Comment, and I'll find out.

Example of a 2.5 SATA external enclosure,

Example of a 3.5 SATA external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2145406&CatId=2780

Example of a 2.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1086960&CatId=2781

Example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) enclosure,

The information on how to open a WD MyBook case, is not something the external harddrive manufacturer states.
For this we'll have to rely on videos that are made,

There are also other related videos to the right.

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine.
try it in different usb ports.
Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers.
then check.
Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check.
If your harddrive still not recognized then you need to repair your harddrive.Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer then your harddrive has internal issue.

Have a look at this article on external hard disk troubleshooting. Could be that you need to delete the USB root hub devices in the Device Manager to force Windows to recognize the device.

If you hear a clicking sound then that might be the sound of a defective harddrive. You could try removing the harddrive from the case and installing it directly into the computer to see if it is working. If it does then it could be the hard drive case power supply is defective. But the clicking sounds like a defective drive. If it is still under warranty then you could get it repaired by western digital...if it is still under warranty then do not open the case or you could void it.

Computer suddenly not recognizing relatively new WD MyBook 640GB

Just a shot in the dark, but ..., shut down your computer and unplug the drive. Turn the hard drive off, then back on. Plug it back into the computer and restart. If it doesn't pop up, restart your computer this time with it plugged in.
Is there any noise coming from the drive? Is the green light on the front?
The same thing happened to me and the same drive, but 500gb. I did the above and it fired right back up again. You may have to delete the trial version from the drive if it on there, or from your computer if you had originally installed it.

External harddrive

yea this is a hard one you will need a recovery program something good that will go in deep and find all the shadow programs on your (HDD) Hard drive. if your computer does not recognize this HDD or memory stick this means u have reformatted a computer and the HDD or memory stick has been taken out half way through the format process. if you get a recovery program this means u will not get everything off it will only take the shadows of all your programs and files.

I hope this helps
