This computer is running very slow -browser is even slower and I am at a loss of things to do for it... I reformatted the hard drive with windows xp, run a test for spy-were and found nothing, also installed new ram (1 GB) and it got a tiny bit faster but not much. Any ideas?
Go to www.acebyte.com this program is a all around utility and free, this will help with performance and speed even with a slow computer.
Testimonial: "Thanks for the help anyway, I was a very old computer."
Acebite didn't seem to do much... I did the turbo boost and not sure what else to do with it. The memory manager says (if I am reading it correctly):
Available physical mem 1.4 using 27%
Available swap mem 3.3 using 10%
Available visual mem 2.0 using 2%
What does this mean and what else can I try?
Also, it seems the graphics are slower then the sound...
all your figures are good, you have plenty of ram to do the job, XP is light on resources. Did you have a HDD replacement recently? It seems the hardware is slow to respond, it is possible the hard drive is slowly failing, Do a drag using acebyte software, note it will take some time, but it does a great job, let me know the result.
If the graphics are slower than the sound it indicates the motherboard is failing, HP unfortuneatelly has problems with their main board and the only remedy is motherboard replacement, you have done everything and more, this machine should be flying. The laptop will probably continue to slow until it crashes.
Do you mean a defrag?
Yes! do a complete defrag of your hard drive using acebyte software.
Ok, I defraged and did a full scan and repair and its still slow.
There is nothing more you can do, the only suggestion, top it up with more ram, and try another hard drive.
Thank you very much, I hope you find one that is more suitable.

Well, generally speaking, there are a number of reasons that may causing your HP PC running slow, but generally two factors: outdated hardware or poor system maintenance. For hardware part: you can get more RAM, higher CPU etc. For system part: there might be a lot of junk files, caches, errors etc out there, about 80% slow HP issues are caused by this reason, in this case you can rely on http://www.speeduphp.com/fix-slow-hp.html to free detect and fix related issues. This should help, regards!
SOURCE: HP Lattitude D600 Laptop freezes up
It could be a number of things. . Sometimes the unit will freeze when it overheats.. Have a look around the exhaust vents and see if there is excessive dust built up around there. If you notice any, you may have to take it in to get checked. If you are tech-saavy, then take it apart and clean out the CPU fan. Also make sure that there is good airflow around the vent when operating the unit.
If this is not the case, then you should take some notes to see if there is a trend when this happens. What sort of apps are running when it freezes at the 45 min mark. Is it only on battery? If so, its possible the battery is running out of juice and the software is not throwing the correct warnings - it just freezes the machine (this is exactly what my Asus EEEPC does to me when I let it run wayyy down on the battery - it freezes. However, it warns me a few minutes ahead of time). Try yours on AC and see if it has the same problem. If not, then its likely your battery. You may need to go in and tweak your power management settings to make sure that it warns you when the battery level is low.

Do the following without the battery inserted.
Let the computer sit with no battery for 24 hours. Do not put the battery in at all. Try using your original memory stick ONLY, with no hard drive and see if it will POST. If it does, insert the hard drive and try again. Could be the new memory...
Another thing you can try is reseating the processor. Turn the ZIF screw, take the processor out (WATCH THE PINS!!) and put back in GENTLY. Leave the memory in the computer, hard drive removed, try to power on.
These models have been known for bad motherboards. Contact HP and arrange to send it in. If you do enough digging on HPs website, you'll find the service advisory.
