Question about Vtech V.Smile TV Learning System

12 Answers

Our V-smile system will not turn on even though it is plugged in.

There does not seem to be any power to the system despite everything being plugged in properly. It just stopped working.

I have bought two VTech smile systems. The first one suddenly stopped working so we bought another once because it is my son's favorite toy at the moment. However, 3 months after having the second one it also stopped working.

I have tried many sets of new batteries and the power button doesn't light up, nor does the game system work

  • salinaduran Nov 18, 2008

I plug in the unit and at first I thought it was the power source so I tried another 9volt plug and the system turned on but it would not load. I bought this unit years ago, but really I may have only used this toy about 15 times. I decided to break it out for my younger nieces and found that it is not working. I'm fustrated because this unit is not cheap. I really do not want to purchase another unit that really in my opion has not lasted as long as I feel it should for the price. I bought dollar store toys that have held up better than that.

I am having the same problem. I can't get the system to turn on, despite being plug into the outlet.

Same problem here. We bought it a few years ago for our daughter. She used it a few times, we moved and put it way. It probably has a total of 4 hrs. of total use. Then it quit working, I thought the plug may have a short, bought a new one, doesn't work. We have numerous games and none work...the unit will not turn on if a game is in it. Yet, if we try to turn it on without a game, there is a "V-smile" screen with image and sound. We haven't been hard on the unit, we were talking about buying a new one for our other two yet, after reading these posts, I'm not sure it is a great idea.

  • cbaju1299 Nov 30, 2008

This is the second one I have purchased. The first one never worked. I have the same problem with the second one. I bought the v-tech for my son and and within 3 months, it stopped working. I am frustrated because I have tried everything I could think of. The system isn't expensive and I would hope V-Tech would do something to help. However, they haven't been any help at all. So here I am, trying to find another way to fix it. From all the responses, I guess I should just throw it away and cut my losses.

  • skystar404 Dec 01, 2008

I have the same problem. My nephew loves it and was playing it when it shut off. we have tried twice to put new batteries in it but it still wont work. He loves the system and I have not found another system similar to v tech. He is too young for Ninentdos or Play stations. My only problem now is: what do I do with the 6 games he has for V Smile? (because I will probably never purchase another one.)

  • Anonymous Dec 02, 2008

I am having a similiar problem with my son's v-smile. It stopped working so we unplugged it and plugged it back in after waiting 2 minutes. The system now has power but will not register on the channel....I am just getting the blank blue screen on my TV? I have tried unplugging and plugging back in the red/yellow/white cords but nothing??? Very frustrating as I thought V-Tech was a better name in products. We have had the unit since last Xmas but he has probably only used it 20-25 times in the last year....

  • msmevs Dec 12, 2008

I bought the older version of this system just under a year ago, and have had problems with it since two months after that. We hardly attemp using it because it is so frustrating. It seems to work only when it wants, and a multiplenumber of restarts no longer makes a difference. The machine does not even power on not register that it is plugged in. I wanted to buy a new one since I invested in a ton of games when we first bought it, but seeing as how so many people continue to have similar problems with the new unit, this may prove to be a further waste of hard-earned money.

  • tina_lochli Dec 14, 2008

We've only had the system since last Christmas and my kids hardly played it. Once in a while i can get the system to work. Like everyone, it doesn't turn on and register on the channel most of the time. It will once in while turn on but I have to unplug everything and have the game in before and now I have batteries AND the adapter in!! (Also, we'll never get the next game to play if we take it first one out). I have spent so much time fumbling with all it that even my kids call it "junkie". I hope to get some resolution from customer service.

I just emailed them as I am having this issue and have been for the past month.

Okay so I'm completely over the V-smile. Will never buy another one of thier products EVER! Just to let you all know we are on our 4th V-Smile. We've returned the system 3 times for the same problem. It just will stop powering on. After this 4th one we are done! Just thought I would share.

  • Anonymous May 19, 2009

Same prob. bought 2 V-smile system. The older orange one (which wouldnt power on periodically and which i bought a new power cable for and still had the same prob.), And the newer pink version which i've had only 2-3 months and is having the same problem. Very often it will not power on. (i bought new power cord for this system as well, it worked for awhile then started doin same thing, now it dosent power on at all. Ive even tried cleanin all contacts and using the "unplug, hold power button for 45 sec. and plug back in method" on both systems. nothing works.) In my opinion V-smile system is junk and the company that makes them needs to "bone-up" on thier game system quality production knowledge. noone should buy them until the company finally admits theres a prob and resolves the issue permanently.

I can't believe that holding the buttons down for 45 seconds without batteries or adaptor fixed both of them after them not working for over two years!!!

I got the system for my 4 year old daughter less than 2 weeks ago and it quit on me. It's rediculous! Anyway, at first we used batteries and it worked fine but the batteries went dead after she played it about 3 times so we went and bought the power cord. We plugged it in and it wouldn't work at all. I looked all over the internet trying to find a way to fix it because we also got her $100 worth of games and had already thrown away the box so we couldn't return it. Everyone was talking about a reset button and my system DOES NOT have one! I finally found a SOLUTION[most likely temporary] Take the batteries out. Hold the ON button down for 45 seconds, replace the batteries with FRESH ones and turn it on. Sounds like it won't work right?!? Well it did for me and before the game system would come on for NOTHING. Hopefully this helped! good luck

I tried this also, but to find that the Orange 9Volt lead inside of the unit came loose and the unit would not work with Batteries or the AC adaptor,,,got the soldering gun out and it works great now.

When my children's v motion did not come on I tried this.
Remove batteries or disconnect power adapter hold on button for 45 seconds. reconnect power supply and this should fix the problem. it worked for me.

I myself was ready to discard the system when I entered a search in Google and found this site. The 45 second reset does work... YAY!!! What I have found out is that one of the games we have is bad and once we would place this in the system, it would not work. After reseting and trying all the other games it works fine. So, it is the one game that has gone bad not the system. Wanted to let everyone know that you should check your games and if the system shuts down, complete the 45 second reset again and try a different game.

I have had the console for 4 years and the pocket for 2 years. Both units have been heavily used and abused over the years. Periodically the contacts on the games will need to be cleaned. I do this with a cotton swab or qtip with alcohol on it. Just push back the little cover on each game and clean both sides gently. I clean the contacts inside the units occationally as well. Just be sure to unplug or take the batteries out first and let it dry before powering back up.

The powerpack for my pocket just died after 2 years of being used daily. I have so far been very happy with v.smiles. Hopefully cleaning will solve your problems :D

I again had the same problem vsmile just wouldnt go on with adaptor so i put in batteries which also didnt work (funnily enought though i forgot to take the batteries out and they still got drained of power). I have just tried the 45 second reset thing (which i didnt think would work considering there is no power going to it) but my 4 year old is now playing it! Am rather relieved as i was about to buy a vsmile pocket just so the games were not wasted!

Okay here is what just worked for us after we bought the $20 Wow Wow Wubbzy game and the stupid console would not turn on. Take out the batteries, take the legs off and take all of the screws out. Open the console and check all the wires. (what a cheap manufacturing job!) Anyway from the inside check the power on and off connection ( in laymans terms jiggle the wires) put the batteries back in and hit the on button. Ours came back on so we just put the bottom back with a couple of the screws left the legs off. In case we have to do it again. Now she is happily playing her game. Good Luck!

I bought my daughter the vtech smile in pink, no power at all changed batteries, and bought new adaptor still dead. phoned vtech was told the games transfer a virus onto console. And i was advised to clean the prongs on the game with nail polish remover on a cotton bud?. If this did not work I was surprisingly told to post it back and it would be repaired or replaced even though I bought it 18 months ago.I guess there trying to repair the tarnished brand.

We have run into the same problem with the console and hand held unit. We took them apart to make sure all the wires and components did not come unsoldered, all was intact. My husband took some VERY find sandpaper and sanded the contacts on each of our son's games and it seems to work. Don't know why this should affect if the console or hand held unit turns on but so far it has fixed the problem. The console is hardly played with and taken care of, the hand held we bought used and has had MANY hours of use, but both went funny around the same time, and the only common thing between them was the games that were being played on it. This may be the solution, it may not, doesn't hurt to try. Just be sure the sandpaper is very fine.

I have this same exact problem. I emailed vtech and they told me..OH NO they have never heard of this..they gave me all kind of stats and junk that meant nothing...my suggestion is email them and let them know because according to them they have no problem..by the way I had bought two of the older versions and one of the newer one thinking maybe they had fixed it on the new version..but low and behold after a couple of months of use the same thing is happening...

No power when I tried the power button. This is the real repair! Tested electricity on main board. No power to main board or to power button. Tested power on adapter plug in board. Got current from adapter connection. Solution re solder black and orange cable on power board (going to main board). Plug in and bang we have power. Good luck!

My Vtech vsmile didn't work a the time I push the power button never happend my batterie are test and are brand new an i try to connect direct with a power supply never work again

There are problems with the power adaptors. Did you use a VSmile power adaptor, or something that just seemed to fit the unit? Using the wrong power adaptor (like unknowingly plugging a Leapfrog power adaptor) into the unit can cause damage to the Vsmile Board.
Push and hold the power (smile) button for one minute, then install fresh batteries. if it powers back up, then try:

Dirty Smartridges (the game cartridges) are to blame for about 90% of VTech Vsmile products not powering up.
In some instances, the cartridge slot on the unit itself can become damaged and will cause no power up.
Kids (of all ages) can dirty a smartridge in less than a second, and render the whole system dead.

My daughters v. smile will not turn on

The ac adaptor has to be set to the correct voltage , there should be a small adjuster on the mains plug.
1.5v for each battery ( regardless of battery size ); so 6v for a 4 battery , 9v for 6 battery , etc.

I Buy the Vtech V.Smile TV Learning System and it donot work

Make sure the power cord is plugged in and that the red/white/yellow cables are plugged properly into the TV. Also, as you plug the red/white/yellow cables into the TV, make sure you turn the TV to the right channel - it is different for every TV. For instance, the red/white/yellow on the front of my Sony is labelled Video 2 - yours might be labelled FRONT, AUX, or something else.

Things you can try to get the V.Smile TV Learning System to work:
1) Press the Reset – Press and hold the ON button for about 10 seconds
2) Make sure the game is inserted far enough into the system, and that it is pointing in the right direction. You may occasionally need to clean the contacts.
3) Also, make sure you are using the supplied power cord/adapter, not batteries. Batteries cause more problems than they’re worth.

Vtech v smile console (not pocket)

I seen many problems with these systems.
I'm an electronics engineer by trade.
Most problems are due to the cheap plateing on the cartridges contacts..it can make the console do very strange things.

firstly push back the spring loaded cover for the cartridge contacts (on the cart' not the machine) and give em a dry scrub with a scouring pad and a good wiping with a dry clean cloth....works 90% of the time.

some times it is needed to strip the console and clean the internal contacts in the cart' slot.
