Question about Sony Handycam CCD-TRV98 Camcorder
It looks like night shot is on, but its not, as it shows a light fixture when pointed at it but not when you point away. If I try to record something inside the house nothing shows up. I can see color in the view finder and lcd when I am outside in the light
The problem you are having is called a "stuck iris" Inside the lens are two thin plastic sheets that slide over one another that limit the amount of light that comes into the lens. In some Sony camcorders, the motor or "actuator" that drives the iris, or moves the two sheets which are the iris opened and closed. The actuators sometimes leak oil onto the plastic sheets causing them to stick, so the light coming into the lens is stuck at one level. Some technicians will recommend lens replacement (expensive) but many times the iris assembly can be removed from the lens and cleaned. Try to find a service shop that will clean the iris rather than replacing the lens.
