How to replace power cord on Hoover Windtunnel...
Posted by SaxTeacher on Apr 15, 2008
The cord on my Hoover Windtunnel upright vacuum is damaged from having been run over while vacuuming. I purchased a replacement power cord, agitator brush, belt, and filters from the Hoover web site.
I have installed the new brush, belt, and filters. I'm ready to install the replacement cord, but I can't figure out how to access the interior part of the vacuum! I tried removing many different screws but none of them seemed to give me access to the necessary area. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
Hoover U6616-900 Windtunnel Bagless Upright
Depending on where the cord comes out, you may want to check the owner’s manual for the exploded view of the cord area. Usually the cord comes out of the handle and there should be handle screws to release the existing cord and when you replace the cord mark the wires so that you will replace the new cord in the same manner. If it comes out of the body of the vacuum there are recessed screws that will let out into the vacuum to replace the cord. You don’t want to exceed the repairs cost to the price of what you paid for it. The decision should be yours, example: if the repairs costs are $200.00 and you paid $279.99 then @ that point you would have to decide if the repair costs are worth or do you want to pay the lower cost of repair and continue on. Just a suggestion... You may want to check with your local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Need help installing belt on Hoover self propelled upright vacuum

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Hoover Ultra U6430-900 Wind Tunnel Bagged Upright. The best way to install the belt on a Hoover to replace one or both of the belts @ the same time for the best cleaning. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months for best results. There is a tool that looks like a screwdriver that has a right or left angle on the end that serves as a belt puller and to hook the belt(s) onto the brushroll 1st and then take your puller and then pull or stretch the belt onto the motor pulley. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

SOURCE: replace on/off switch on hoover vacuum

My wife picked one up on the side of the road that someone had tossed. The power switch would not turn off. I took the two bolts out of the top part of the handle, and then removed the screws along the back. This will remove the required panels to access the On/Off switch. Once I found the actual on/off button, I found it to be frozen in the "ON" position. After manipulating it for a few minutes, I got the switch to work. This machine now operates great, and I now have a Hoover :)

SOURCE: Installing belt

here are the step by step instructions from the owners manual for your machine.
Disconnect cleaner from electrical outlet. WARNING: Agitator brush roll can start suddenly. Unplug cleaner before turning it over. Replacing Flat Belt Place handle in low position and turn cleaner over so bottom side is facing up. Remove the 6 screws as shown with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift off bottom plate. Replace belt if it is stretched, cut or broken. To check the flat belt. Removing Bottom Plate Removing Belt Positioning Belt Remove used belt from large pulley and discard. Reposition bottom plate and 6 Phillips head screws. Tighten screws securely. Insert agitator brush roll through belt and position belt in groove (A) on agitator brush roll. Inspecting V-Belt The V-belt is designed to last for a long time and is not normally replaced. However, if the V-belt is cracked, gouged or broken, it should be replaced. Slide flat belt off large pulley. To remove V-belt, slide back of belt over pulley (A). Then firmly pull on belt and “snap” it out. Discard used belt. To install new belt (with lettering on outside of belt), slide back of belt over pulley and pull front of belt toward groove next to pulley. Belt will “pop” into place. Flat Belt: What to Buy Use only genuine HOOVER belts with your cleaner. When purchasing a new belt, ask for Flat belt - HOOVER part No. 40201-271. V-Belt: What to Buy Use only genuine HOOVER belts with your cleaner. When purchasing a new belt, ask for V belt - HOOVER part No. 40201-200.
If you can't get the answer from this post, send me a message and I will try to walk you through this. I hope it helps.

SOURCE: I have a Hoover Model #U6430-900, Self-propelled

Hi There,

Here's a step by step guide that will explain in detail how to remove the top cover on your Hoover. The repair was written for a different problem then one you're experiencing, but you can follow along step by step to see how you can remove the top cover.

If you haven't already purchased the actuator arm, here's a link for you to the part on Amazon
Hoover Windtunnel Self-Propelled Windtunnel Actuator Arm

Here's the repair guide:
Step 1. Make sure that the vacuum is unplugged. Turn the machine upside down so that the brushes are facing upwards. I find the easiest way to do this is to put the brushes on top of a counter top or work bench with the handle of the vacuum resting on the floor. Remove the four screws that hold the bottom plate in place. Remove the bottom plate, both belts and then the roller brush from the machine:

Step 2. There are 3 screws that hold the top brush cover in place that need to be removed. On the right side the screw is down below the transmission to the right. There's also a screw in the agitator tray, in the middle that needs to be removed. NOTE: This small screw in the agitator tray is only present on some models, you's may or may not have this little screw, but all models will have all other screws circled. I have circled both screws that need to be removed:

The screws on the left side that need to be removed are also circled. One screw holds the upper brush cover on, and the other two screws secure the hose in place. Remove all three screws as well as the transparent hose cover:

Step 3. After all of these screws have been removed, there are two clips that are the last things holding the top brush cover onto the vacuum. Use a flat head screwdriver to push these clips off on both the left and right sides. The right side clip is near the pulley that the flat belt2_bing.gif rides on, and the left side clip is next to the internal hose.

Step 4. Once both of these clips have been pushed so the unhook from the lower agitator housing, remove the top cover.

Once you have removed the top cover, here's a link to a guide that will show you how to replace the actuator arm itself:

I hope that this information helped you fix your vacuum cleaner. If you have any follow up questions, or need clarification on something, please feel free to use the comment box here on the Fixya repair page, and I'll be happy to answer any of your questions.

If this was helpful, please be so kind and rate the repair, or leave feedback. This is greatly appreciated by the Fixya community if an answer was helpful.

Self propel unit broken

This is a farily common repair on this model. What ends up happening is that when someone picks up the vacuum cleaner2_bing.gif by the handle of the machine, which on this model also is the controller for the self-propelled transmission, it places too much strain on the actuator arm of the vacuum2_bing.gif cleaner.

You can do the best to try and not pick up the machine by the handle, but instead using the carrying handle on the back of the vacuum cleaner, this is distribute the weight much better, and even make the machine seem less heavy, and this will also prevent the actuator arm from breaking again in the future.
