Question about Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculator

TI-83 display flashes screen of characters then goes blank

When my daughter's TI-83 Plus is turned on, a screen of characters flashes, then the screen goes blank. After 5-15 seconds or so, the screen will flash once or twice then go blank again. It keeps cycling through this. The pattern appears to be the same - the leftmost eighth of the screen is pretty much blank, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th eighth "columns" mostly have a small "pipe" (|), the farthest 8th "column" is mostly dark. The 5th and 6th eighths are mostly horizontal dark, thick bars.

I'm told it was dropped about 2 months ago. I cannot find a reset button to try. I did try the memory reset (2nd, Enter 712) without noticing any difference.

We've tried two different sets of fresh batteries with the same results.

Thanks for any possible solutions.

Well, if screen shows the RAM CLEARED message, that means your calculator is working. Just press the [CLEAR] key, message will be erased and you are ready to crunch numbers.

SOURCE: my TI-83 Plus appears locked up no flashing

Try [2nd], [MODE] or [2nd] [ON] or [CLEAR] or take out a battery, this won't erase anything whatsoever as long as you have the factory back up battery in it, which unless you took it out, don't worry, you have it

If the screen is not busted, adjust the contrast without going all the way to totally dark or to totally blank. Calculators do occasionally become unusable (old age, mishandling).

I'm using a TI-83 Plus calculator. Halfway through my screen there is a straight line preventing me from using the top half of the screen. No matter what I do I can only use the bottom half. Is there...

You probably have your calculator set to display the graph on the home screen. Try pressing MODE and going to the last option, then changing it from "Horiz" to "Full". "Horiz" means it is displaying the graph (probably without axes since your screen is otherwise blank) on half the screen.

TI-83 Plus completely blank and won't turn on. All batteries are fine.

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

TI-83 countdown

Pressing 2nd then the up or down arrows is how you change the contrast on the TI-83. All you need to do is press the 2nd key then hold the down arrow to get your screen back. The countdown that you saw was just the value the calculator assigns to the contrast. It goes from 0-10.

Hope that helps!

Press and hold CLEAR while reinstalling the AAA battery.
Continue holding CLEAR button and press ON.
Release buttons and press CLEAR again.
Calculator should be normal mode now. ;0)

Random characters lines and pixels

I've had a similar problem in the past with my TI-86. It still happens sometimes when I don't use it for a while. To fix it, all I did was set the screen to its darkest setting and left it on for 10 minutes (keep it from turning itself off, by pushing buttons every few minutes.) It works great, and the calculator is fine unless you leave it unused for a month or so. A similar solution may work for you.
