Question about Craftsman 3 gal. Air Compressor, 1.5 hp, Horizontal k

Broken connecting rod

I have a 60 gallon 6 HP Craftsman compressor and one of the connecting rods broke. The parts catalog has the parts I need but my question has to do with the installation. Is there anything to do other than install a new piston and connecting rod, for example, is there any type of sealant or lubrication required?

Craftsman compressors come in two flavors, light duty dry lube system or the heavy duty oil crankcase type. If you have the dry lube, your repair kit will consist of a cylinder, and piston rod with a vinyl piston ring. You should replace both cylinders and both bearings. Be carefull not to let the cylinder heads come apart because the gaskets are expensive. Make sure to turn the pump by hand to make sure everything is installed correctly.
If you have the oil bath type of compressor, you can replace only one rod, however make sure that the rod journal is smooth. Most rod failures are due to lack of oil causing the rod to melt onto the journal. This metal must be removed before installing the new rod. Use light sand paper cut into long strips and pull across journal untill clean and smooth. Use compressor oil instead of motor oil for long compressor life. enjoy

Craftsman Air Comp. 6 hp oil-less, 33 gal horz. tank - sounds really loud

Sources of noise from craftsman oil free compressors (could be Made by Campbell Hausfeld or Porter Cable) include loose fan, failing bearing/s on the piston rod and housing, failing seal ring on piston, air filter intake and loose motor mounts. With the housing cover off, check the fan blade for cracks or loose screw. Turn motor by hand till the piston is at top of stroke. Examine the cylinder for scratches close to top. If scratched, air is leaking past vinyl ring making noise and causing longer fill time. If everything looks ok, suspect noise coming from bearings. Hard to tell if bearings are failing by looking at them. I have seen many failures of the piston bearing on the crank (fairly easy to change, I use alternator bearing from auto parts ) , however, the bearing in the housing just behind the crank bearing is much harder to replacable. Good luck with your fix-it project.

You didn't give your model number so here's a possibility: If it's vibrating that much it's usually a good indicator the air pump connecting rod is broke. If it's been in storage it's possible the oil evaporated enough or it didn't have enough in it that it didn't lubricate the con-rod bearings. It would have started the first time but as heat built up in the bearing areas it could have seized up when it was shut off or broke when it tried to restart. You'll have to take the air pump apart to verify what's broke and what's damaged and what has to be replaced. Most Craftsman parts are only available through Sears (www.searspartsdirect.com).

I am replacing the cylinder sleeve and compression ring on my Craftsman air compressor model 919165020. Searspartsdirect says that I need two compression rings. Is this right? My compressor only had one...

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Craftsman-Parts/Air-compressor-Parts/Model-919165020/0247/0703000 This is the exploded view that I used.

67 head 65 gasket 64 reed valve plate 63 ring, this one goes under the reed valve plate 62 screw that goes thru the 61 piston 60is a ring that sets on the top of the connecting rod screw the piston with the ring into the top of the connecting rod then take the connecting rod end cap off and cover the studs with some rubber tubing. This will protect the crankshaft when you push connecting rod and piston assembly in to the sleeve that is seated in the block. The ring should be flexible enough to push into the sleeve,if not a bit of oil should help.Guide the connecting rod on to the the crank shaft.I hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.com

Need piston rod for rep0200604 compressor

A search of your model number turns up a powermate compressor. Unfortunately the piston rod is not available as a seperate part, you have to order the entire pump/motor unit. The only place I could find it was at this link: http://www.ereplacementparts.com/powermate-vpp0200604-single-stage-oil-lubricated-air-compressor-parts-c-117046_117047_117049.html.

I am changing the belt on a oil less 33 Gallon vertical 1.6 hp Craftsman Compressor and want to know if the bolt that holds the piston rod on is left hand or right hand threads?

This is standard thread, right to tighten and left to loosen.

Make sure to put a small amout of loctite on the threads when you put it back together.

If you are talking of the clamshell cover, MANY plastic covers big and small have a few screws and then have molded "rods" on one side and a mating hole in a boss on the other. For these, one has to CAREFULLY pry them apart EVENLY so all seperate evenly..
