Question about Tascam DP01 All-In-One Recording Package Microphone

Trouble powering up

When I try to turn on my DP-01fx, most of the time it doesn't boot up. The LCD shows some random display at half-intensity, the drive doesn't spin, nothing. But if I keep trying repeatedly, eventually it powers up. After it's been on and warmed up, I can cycle power and it boots up fine.

My Tascam DP-01FX/CD was working fine until yesterday. It started booting up and seemed to freeze. None of the buttons functioned. I had to turn off the main switch. Today, it started up normally but after mastering 3 short songs, froze. Now it won't boot up at all. I have a lot of my songs backed up onto CDs but not all and am afraid to send it out for repair as I'll probably lose everything. Help!

I would suspect the power adapter might be bad. You can use an after market one as long as it complies with the AC power specs given in the manual.

TASCAM DP-01 won`t startup

Press and hold down the "track edit" and the "shut down" buttons while turning the power on until it says "-init screen- please wait". It will ask you if you want to initialize hdd. If so press yes/enter. This Will wipe your hard drive clean. If no just press no/exit. This works on the dp-01fx. It should work on the dp-01 as well.

Since the unit powers up and displays an error message it means that the power supply is working to some extent. The hard drive is probably malfunctioning and needs to be replaced. The DP-01 I have uses an 40 pin IDE 3.5" hard drive so finding a replacement should be easy unless it needs special formatting like TIVO drives.

As for the first solution - why do you think a PC hard drive needs -5v? The PC drive power connector has four pins - two grounds, 5v and 12v.

It means the harddrive has crashed. I have the same model. It is a manufacturer flaw. You can try saving your recordings on external devices or contacting Tascam directly.

DP-01FX/CD Problem

nslo, tell him to try replacing the power supply first, power supplys burn up ALL the time, as long as the plug fits and it has a rating of equal or greater amperage, same voltage, equal to or greater watts then it will work. Those variable voltage multi plug ones they sell at k-mart work but I've never had one that lasted long.

DP-01FX/CD sound quality of CDs

Nothing really specific other than to make sure you are recording as close to 0 db as possible without going over. Your master fader also needs to be set at 0db or above as this effects the volume when mastering.

Commercial CDs use a lot of compression to attain volume levels which aren't attainable without it. You should however be able to reproduce onto CD the volume levels you are hearing on your Tascam without resorting to compression.

To troubleshoot, you might want to try exporting your master tracks as wav files onto your computer via usb and then listening to them there. If the volume is low there you aren't creating master tracks with good volume (see above: master fader level), if the tracks sound good as wavs on your PC, then burn them onto a cd from there. If that CD has proper volume then you may have some problem with your Tascam CD burner although I've never seen a situation where a burner actually caused low volume like this.

Best of luck.
