Question about Dell Inspiron XPS M140 Notebook
Press on button for Dell XPS M140 laptop, no color lights on power button, just white. Lock lights flash on, system sounds like booting, hd is spinning, then lock lights go off - click, PC shuts down. No POST, no video at all. Tried reseating hd, RAM, cd-dvd, etc.etc, disconnected all and tried a clean boot, same issue. Green steady light on power adapter, battery removed and tried to power on. This is a friends laptop and she says that was working on cleaning a virus and it just shut off and hasn't rebooted since. Went through Dell step-by-step troubleshooting, that didn't help.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.
Most laptops that I have worked on that power off that quickly turned out to be an overheating problem. Is the cooling fan running for the brief period that you can hear the hard drive before it powers off ? If the fan is running another potential resolution might be to remove the processor and apply new thermal paste.
