  1. Buy an empty spray bottle and some baking soda.
    You'll find that baking soda is cheap -- especially if you buy in bulk.
  2. Using a funnel, place 3 heaping teaspoons of baking soda into the spray bottle.
    If the baking soda clogs the funnel, unclog it with water.
  3. Wash the baking soda into the spray bottle by running water into the funnel.
    Fill the bottle with water. After the bottle fills, you'll notice undissolved baking soda that has settled at the bottom of the bottle.
  4. Shake the spray bottle so that all the baking soda dissolves in the water.
    Unless all the baking soda is fully dissolved, some of it gets left behind in the bottom of the bottle as a residue.
  5. When the oven is cold, spray the baking soda and water solution on to the black stuff. Do this one or more times a day.
    It is important to work on a cold oven for two reasons:
    • Safety. You can't burn your hands if the oven is cold.
    • Containment. You'll get baking soda all over the house if you start with a hot oven. I know. I've done it.
      Starting with a cold oven solves the problem.
  6. Use your oven as you normally would. Keep spraying wet baking soda on to the top and sides of the interior of the oven between meals.
    Wet baking soda will break up the carbon sticking to the sides of the oven. Keep spraying baking soda on to the black stuff between meals until it is all gone.
    Don't worry about getting baking soda in your food. Baking soda is one of the prime ingredients of many recipes such as corn bread. It is safe to add it to your food should you do so inadvertently.
    Using this technique, the black carbon that was stuck to the sides of your oven will flow to the floor of your oven and settle there as a black carbon powder that can be wiped away.
    Your oven will look like a mess while this is in process. Choose a good time to do this.
  7. At your convenience, when the oven is cold, wipe your oven with a damp cloth.
    Eventually, you will have to wipe down your whole oven with a damp cloth. The black carbon and baking soda will will settle together on the bottom of your oven. Both are easily removed with a damp cloth.
    In theory, you will have to apply the spray bottle many times but you should only have to wipe down your oven once. Try not to wipe down the oven prematurely as this removes the active ingredient that makes the whole thing work -- the baking soda.
    Important! Let the baking soda accumulate so that it can do its job.
  8. Repeat, repeat, repeat until all the black carbon is gone.

Model No. 103.9177242. How do I clean oven?


Continuous clean ovens have a special coating to assist in dirt removal and to make self cleaning easier. Use of aftermarket cleaners sometimes damages this coating but I am yet to see any self clean oven get itself 100% clean. Check on the can before using it , if its safe to use on pyrolitic or self clean ovens.

I have no owner's manual and need to know how to clean a "self-cleaning" over.


Manuals for many GE appliances are available here: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/ . You will need the model number and there is a guide to find the plaque at the site. Most ranges will have the plaque under the left front burner, on the frame behind the oven door, on the frame behind the drawer or on the left leg behind the drawer or kickplate.

General cleaning procedure for self-cleaning: first use hot soapy water (non-abrasive cleaner, not an oven cleaner) to clean the frame around the oven and the oven door itself. Also clean large spills (acidic and sugary spills can damage the surface of the oven). Remove all of the racks, foil, pans and the broiler pan from inside the oven. Close the oven. Ventilate the kitchen well. Then it depends on the oven type.

If you have a touch pad, press the Clean button and adjust the time for the cleaning cycle (usually with the +/- touch pads). Then press Start. Press Cancel to stop the cycle. The oven will automatically lock and remain locked until the oven cools down after the cleaning cycle. See the documentation for timed cleaning. If you have a dual oven, you will need to press the Oven button for the one you want to clean.

If you have an older range, push the latch to the right and set the Oven cycle dial to Clean. After the oven has cooled, turn the oven cycle dial to Off and push the latch back to the left.

My self cleaning oven will not lock, so I am assuming it is broken. My oven needs to be cleaned. Since you can not use an oven cleaner on it, what can I use to clean it?

self cleaning solution

  • 1 Remove oven racks and soak them in soapy water
  • 2 Turn on your automatic oven cleaner; this usually entails locking the door and turning the function switch to "clean."
  • 3 Let the oven do its work; it will heat for several hours, charring off baked-on food.
  • Fast Cleaning method
  • 1 Remove oven racks and place them in soapy water to soak.
  • 2 Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
  • 3 Turn the oven off and spray the inside with oven cleaner.
  • 4 Allow to sit for 10 minutes.
  • 5 Wipe the cleaner and dirt away with a damp sponge, rinsing frequently. 6 Dry with a soft cloth

    Using the oven self cleaning cycle to clean drip


    This is not advisable because it will severely damage the chrome and or color of the drip pans and the oven racks. It will make the oven racks hard to pull in and out of the oven once the finish has been burned off. I did this, so I know.

    Inside the oven door there are some stains from liquid spill that went through the vent, how can I clean it.


    If your oven is self-cleaning, consult the owner's manual for instructions on how to use this feature. The self-cleaning feature works by heating the interior of the oven to a temperature so hot that it incinerates the residue inside the oven. Normally, it is not a good idea to clean the interior of a self-cleaning oven with a spray cleaner; however, refer to your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer of your oven for further information.

    To clean a non-self-cleaning oven, use one of the many oven cleaners that are available at grocery and hardware stores.

    A wonderful feature is that the ovens self-clean with the press of a few buttons. Only one oven can be programmed to self-clean at a time. Remove the oven racks. Turn off the oven light and close the door. Press the "Clean" button and then press "Auto Set" to automatically clean the oven for 3 hours. Press the "Auto Set" pad again to set the oven for a 4-hour clean cycle, or press the button one more time for a 2-hour cleaning. The oven locks when in cleaning mode. When the oven is finished cleaning, the word "Cleaned" will be displayed on the control panel, and the oven will remain locked until the oven has cooled, which takes about an hour. To cancel the self-clean cycle, just press the "Cancel" button. Simple!

    and download the manual CAUTION 
    • It is normal for parts of the ovens to become hot during a self-clean cycle. 
    • To prevent damage to oven doors, do not attempt to open the doors when LOCK is displayed. 
    • Avoid touching doors, windows or oven vent area during 
    a clean cycle. 
    Do not use commercial oven cleaners on the oven finish or around any part of the ovens.  They will damage the finish or parts. 
    Do not leave baking/pizza stone in the oven during self-clean. 

    The self-clean cycle uses above-normal cooking temperatures 
    to automatically clean the oven interior. 
    The oven should be cleaned regularly by wiping up spillovers 
    to prevent excessive smoke and flare-ups.  Do not allow a 
    heavy build-up of soil to accumulate in the oven. 
    During the cleaning process, the kitchen should be well 
    ventilated to get rid of normal odors associated with cleaning. 

    Before Self-Cleaning 
    1. Turn off the oven light before cleaning as the light may burn out during the clean cycle. 
    2. Remove broiler pan, all pans, and oven racks from the oven.  The oven racks will discolor and may not slide easily after a self-clean cycle if they are not removed. 
    3. Clean oven frame, door frame (area outside of gasket, and around the opening in the door gasket) with a nonabrasive 
    cleaner such as Bon Ami* or detergent and water.  The self-cleaning process does not clean these areas.  They should be cleaned to prevent soil from baking on during the clean 
    cycle.  (The gasket is the seal around the oven door and window.) 
    4. To prevent damage, do not clean or rub the gasket around the oven door.  The gasket is designed to seal in heat during the clean cycle. 
    5. Wipe up excess grease or spillovers from the oven bottom. This prevents excessive smoking, flare-ups or flaming during the clean cycle. 
    6. Wipe up sugary and acidic spillovers such as sweet potatoes, tomato, or milk-based sauces. Porcelain enamel is acid-resistant, not acid-proof.  The porcelain finish may discolor if acidic or sugary spills are not wiped up before a self-clean cycle. 

    Important: 
    • Oven temperature must be below 400° F to program a clean cycle. 
    Only one oven can be cleaned at a time. 
    • Both oven doors lock when either oven is being cleaned. 
    To set Self-Clean: 
    1. Close the oven door. 
    2. Press the Clean pad. 
        • CLEAN flashes. 
        • SET and UPPER or LOWER flash in the display. 
    3. Press the Autoset pad. 
        • “MEd” (Medium Soil, 3 hours) is displayed. 
    4. Press the Autoset pad to scroll through the self-cleaning settings. 
         “HVy” (Heavy Soil, 4 hours) 
         “MEd” (Medium soil, 3 hours) 
         “LITE” ( Light Soil, 2 hours) 
    Choosing the soil level of the oven automatically programs the self-cleaning time. 
    5. After four seconds, the oven will start cleaning. 
        • If the door is not closed, beeps will sound and ‘door’ will display.         If the door is not closed within 30 seconds, the self-cleaning       operation will be canceled and the display will return to the time of day. 
        • CLEAN will appear in the display. 
        • LOCK will flash in the display.  Once the door locks, LOCK will
          remain steady. 
        • The cleaning time will start counting down in the display.
