Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I've gotten my new Dell xps 420 up & running over the weekend. But, something is driving me crazy. I accomplished the export/import of my windows address book/windows contacts... however, I can't seem to figure how to arrange them in alphabetical order by the last names. PLEASE HELP ASAP. Arranging them alphabetically by the first names is no help when you have 100s of addresses. Thanks, Carolyn Scott

I have Dell XPS 420 , with windows home server running for some time. I tried to insall/upgrade RAM from 3 gb to 6 gb. So, i found the right RAM (2x2GB) and removed the two old 512 mb from the slot and...

According the the dell specification you can only install up to 4gb, so I don't understand you saying that you were upgrading from 3gb to 6gb. Make sure that all the ram that is installed is of the same brand and speed (667 / 800 MHz Dual Channel Dual DDR2 SDRAM). The fact that it is saying no boot device also would suggest that it is possibly something wrong with your harddrive, whether it was corrupted or damaged while you were changing the RAM, if you have a spare harddrive try installing and booting from it. If that doesn't work it could be a motherboard issue, which the BIOS should be update, all the jumpers on the board should be checked etc. Its rather hard to diagnose a problem such as this, and the fact that after you installed the new RAM, even the old RAM would not work, suggests that you may have damaged something while messing around in the computer.

When i try boot my dell xps 420 it states that there is no boot device available. Why does it say this?

A boot device stores your operating system (i.e. Windows), and is usually your hard drive, but can be any storage medium such as a floppy, usb flash drive, or even a cd rom. When you turn your computer on, your motherboard looks for your OS on any of the storage devices specified in your bios, in the order specified to look first (Ex. Boot order: 1. CD-Rom, 2. Floppy, 3. Hard Drive, 4. Network). Your Dell is telling you that it can't find Windows on any of these devices. Most likely cause is that your hard drive stopped working, your Windows boot.ini file became corrupted, or you have a USB device plugged into your computer, and it needs to be unplugged before turning on your computer.

Reset window vista

Dell has a program called zztop, you can find the utility here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R20457&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P03_XPS_T___&servicetag=&os=W98&osl=en&deviceid=1509&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=&impid=&formatcnt=1&libid=7&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=20307

there is a hidden partition ( you cant see it in windows nor will you be able to see it in most partition managers) that holds your original OS. Running zztop will put this image back on your comptuer.
