Some brands of fax machines and all-in-one printer/scanner/fax/copiers need the ink cartridge to be present and have some ink in it to perform functions which don't actually require ink.
My dad bought a Brother all-in-one, and he is unable to scan or send faxes unless he replaces an empty ink cartridge first. If you have a Brother fax machine, I'd suggest returning it and buying a different brand. They waste ink on unnecessary cleaning procedures and force you to buy more for stuff that doesn't need ink.
there are a couple of things did you buy genuine or reman cartridges and check if they are seated properly.
some remans dont work properly so you have to be sure and always get a money back guarantee from the seller
turn fax machine off open cover and put 3 drops of 3 in 1 oil on the the big silver bar the ink cartridges ride along perform alignment and try to recieve fax if this doesnt work clean all the rubber feed rollers with isopropanol alcohol (rubbing alcohol) applied to a microfiber towel then try.
Use original brother carts: Make sure that all carts are placed well and are secured. Press menu then start mono (blue b/w copy button) then four times arrow-up (tel-index?). machine should be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4. machine will do a cart initialization and do some cleaning. Leave the maintenance mode by pressing 9 then 9 when its ready. Do a test print. If need do cleaning cycles twice.
In case you cant see mag. and cyan your printhead is defectiv and has to be replaced.
