MY HEAT PUMP SYSTEM WILL NOT WORK IN EMERGENCY MODE

I have a Goodman heat pump split system with a HKR 15kw heat kit. I have a White Rogers(1F82-261) 1 stage cool and 2 stage thermostat. My system works great except when in emergency mode. For some reason the emergency coils will not energize, but they run correct in the normal heat cycle. I've tried calling goodman and local HVAC supposed experts and none have an answer. I've checked the wiring diagrams and Goodman shows an ''optional'' emergency heat relay that is not on my unit. How should the unit be wired without the heat realy as i know this is my issue. I also use an outdoor thermostat between the compressor and thermostat that connects on temp fall to 32.

The thermostat sub base has a place to connect a wire usually white to energize the heat strips when you push the stat way hotter than the house temp. that is why the strips come on in normal heat. it also has a terminal that is only energized in emergency heat and it also should have a wire connected to it so that terminal can supply power to the strips when the stat is switched into emerg heat . you can identify the terminal from the wiring diagram and if need be jumper w2 wire over to the aux terminal and it will work. they both go back into the airhandler and power the same strips. w2..................................................................................................w2 in airhandler to strips or w2...jumper to aux......................................................................................................................w2 in airhandler to strips.

Emergency heat not working where is the heating elements located

if you are using a hard wired thermostat, you have one designed for a heat pump. Heat pumps are minimally effective at outdoor temperatures below 30'f. Emergency heat systems are not generally included with any split system, but would be located in the indoor air handler.

Here is a site you can visit with the installation manual for the W/R 1F85.
What type of system are you operating? Is it a Heat Pump? Do you have a heat strip or heating coil for emergency heat? How many stages of heat and cooling? I am sorry for all these questions but they really are necessary. Roger

I HAVE A GOODMAN CPL E30-1 , HOW DO YOU CHECK THE HEAT STRIPS ARE WORKING ? WERE WOULD CHECK THE TEMP AT ?HOW CAN YOU TELL IF THE HEAT PUMP IS WORKING RIGHT .WHAT IS THE COMMON THINGS A TECH SOULD CHECK...

First, you need to get the spec sheet for that unit from www.goodmanmfg.com, go to bottom, click on Partner link, then put in goodman for id, dealer for pass, go to InfoFinder in the Toolkit. under model, put CPLE, under lit type dropdown put spec sheet. Click on the RED SS number in the fourth column. In the spec sheet, print out the Expanded Heating Data sheet for your CPLE30. It shows the outdoor ambient temp, follow that column to the bottom and it shows the pressures you should have. They are very very close it unit is working correctly. It also has a DeltaT for airflow. So, now you can put stat at 1 degree differential so only heat pump comes on and check temp rise and pressures. If both pressures are low, you have lost some charge. As for heat strips, turn stat up 2 or more degrees or put it in Emergency heat. Then the strips should come on....sequencer may delay stages. Then you need to use amp clamp to see if individual heat elements are pulling amps. In E heat, you need to go online and get a CFM/Kw temp rise chart. It will show you what your temp rise from return to supply should be at your cfm with the amount of heat you have..i.e. 10kw, 15kw, etc. If it is cold out and your heat pump is running with no aux heat, the temp rise will get lower as the outdoor temp falls, so alone it will not be able to keep up.

Runs on emergency mode

By emergency mode I am assuming that you have a heat pump connected to the furnace. If so your heat pump is not functioning properly. For this I recommend a service man. To many possible problems in a heat pump to diagnos over the computer
