Question about Aprilaire 600 Humidifier
I have 2 issues.
1. My humidifier will only dispense water when in test mode. It does this when the furnace fan turns on (which I believe is the correct time), but not on any of the number settings.
2. Do the expensive allergen furnace air filters render the humidifier less effective than the cheap fiberglass filters? Even when my test mode is dispensing water, I don't notice any humidity. The damper is in the winter position.
I had this problem several years ago. In order for the water to flow, the outside temperature sending unit must indicate to the controller that it is less than 60F. If not, the unit will not operate outside of test mode. Check the temp outside where your sending unit is (could the sun be heating that side of the house?) and ensure that the circuit to the sending unit is working. I had a bad wire splice inside a wire nut stopping the circuit. Took me a long while to figure it out.
If the outside temp and your sending unit circuit is ok, I wish you luck on your troubleshooting.

I have a similar (test mode only) problem and discovered a "workaround" this morning. My humidifier doesn't work when the fan setting on the furnace thermostat is set to AUTO. If the thermostat fan control is set to ON the humidifier works porperly. I'll be calling my service rep first thing tomorrow.

Tips for a great answer:
If your humidifier is equipped with a Digital Humidifier Control with Water
Panel change indicator, after replacing the Water Panel, turn the control
knob to the "Test/Reset" position until the "Humidifier On" light blinks to
reset its timer. (Blower must be operating and HVAC calling for heat.) Be sure
to turn the control knob back to it's original setting. If the "Humidifier On"
light continues to blink, your humidifier is in Test mode. DO NOT LEAVE THE
CONTROL IN TEST MODE OR HUMIDIFIER WILL NOT OPERATE.
