Because you do not have a DVD compatible drive. You need to add one to your system.

A disk read error occurred

Was this read error on the hard drive, or on a disk installed in the CD/DVD player? If it was a hard drive, then running Checkdisk on the drive will detect and isolate any failed areas. If too many failures occur, you may want to consider a new drive before total failure (and loss of data) occurs. If it was a CD/DVD read error, then the disk may e dirty or scratched. The drive may require cleaning. Or, if the disk was burned on a PC and not commercially, the media may not be fully compatible with the drive in your machine. Some media don't work well with some brands of drives. Almost all manufacturers websites list recommended media for their drives.

My hp media centerm7250n computer wont boot up from the recovery dvd sounds as if the hard drive is spinning

Disconnect the "data" and "power" cables from the disk-drive.
Boot from the Recovery DVD, just to prove that your computer can boot. Of course, you may get an error-message, when no disk-drive is detected, but you will have proved that your computer can boot properly.

Connect a different disk-drive, and boot again from the Recovery DVD, to confirm that it will boot, when some "other" disk-drive is detected.

Ive built my first pc and all went well until the message no hard drive detected comes on all parts are new so any help would be great in fixing this thanks dave

Verify that the hard disk is connected on both data and power cables and is receiving power (it hums at startup); also that the proper EIDE or SATA slot on the motherboard is used, and properly jumpered (e.g. a SATA 2 disk on a SATA 1 configured port is likely to malfunction).

Check that the BIOS is configured to autodetect the hard disk type, and is using the appropriate adapter (EIDE or SATA port), without RAID options or such.

In a pinch, try also ignoring the motherboard labels (e.g., plug the hard disk on the fourth SATA port instead of the first -- the mobo numbering is not always the "logical" one, even if it usually should be.

Can I use DVD-R with my Dell 4600?

Go to my computer, you will see local disk (C)
then the following ,,
if the drive says DVD, then yes.

If it says CD, then no.

Your CD drive will see the disk, and it can be used for data, files, operating system , but a cd can't play a dvd format.

Its a waste to use a dvd disk for data, unless you need a few GB.

There great for backing up windows disks, if it was possible. rolol

Windows media player cannot detect my dvds in the dvd rom player. i have windows vista

Open "My Computer".
Insert a CD-disk into the drive, while holding-down the LEFT-SHIFT key.
Does the label under the CD-icon change?
Remove the CD-disk.
Does the label under the CD-icon change?
Insert a DVD-disk into the drive, while holding-down the LEFT-SHIFT key.
Does the label under the CD-icon change?
Remove the DVD-disk.

If no changes in the icon, after the above, it's time to spend $40 to replace the "dead" drive with a new CD/DVD writer.

When i turn the pc on it goes to hit f1 to cont of f2 and then it says it can not read the hard drive

First open cpu cabinet.
Then reattach both connection cable power cable and sata or ide cable to harddrive.
Then when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key to enter in bios then check there your harddisk is detected?
If your harddisk is detected in bios you can boot your harddrive.
Let me know if you need more assistance.
Thanks.

My emachines dvd rom is not detecting a dvd in the drive

Dissamble the dvd rom from pc. Open it and clean the laser with a soft cloth or try a dvd lens cleaner disk. You can buy it from any hardware shop. Connect the cables correctly. Start with a fresh dvd disk. If your pc still can't detect dvd disc, replace dvd rom with a new one.
