when i play madden/or any 1080p game, my TV says it's playing in 720 (p). The main ps3 menu does come in via 1080 though.
Also notice when watching a movie (BD in 1080), the credits that show on the bottom left or right of the screen are expanded beyond wheat i can see. So i can only see part of the name.
I've gone through all of the PS3 settings and i think everything should be set correctly. Any ideas? (and forgot to mention but my TV does play 1080p). And i use an hdmi cable as well.

Re: ps3 playing BD in 720
First try to reset the video refresh output by holding down the power button with the switch in the back on. hold the front power for 13 secs ..you should hear two beeps one 6 secs after the other. if this doesnt work reset system settings on the XMB menu (all the way to the left)

To change this setting, you must exit the application and change your Video Output Settings from the display settings option in the Settings menu. Make sure the tv is not set on 720p/i and that it is set to 1080i. There has been issues with games that are 1080 downscaling the resolution. this can be confirmed by reading this article. if you provide me with the model of the tv. I can help assist you in ensuring its on 1080p.If you need further assistance please let me know after you try the following above. Thanks, Midwest-tek
Goto settings at the main menu of the ps3, go to the left to settings, then go down to BD/dvd settings go down to BD 1080p 24hz output and disable it.If this doesnt work out for you call up Sony, theyll get you set up with the repair process. before you call them though, be sure to restore system to default settings, because they will ask if youve done that yet.Their number is 800-345-7669 (800-345-SONY) Sometimes if you get a blu ray disc outside of your region, then it's not supposed to work. If you live in the US, then only Blu Ray movies from the US will work.
The problem is all in the settings. You probably have a 1080i television that cannot display in 1080p. To fix this go to the main menu and go to:
Then Blu Ray Disc and make it turn the Display BD in 1080p 24hz or whatever. Once you do that, start the Blu Ray Disc again, and you should be able to watch it. This all happened because your tv doesn't display 1080p.
You most likely have the updated drivers. You may have to go and change a setting. I found an answer on the PS3 website that may be of some use to you. I hope this helps you:
From the site: "go to bd/dvd setting and set the "108024hz" option off"
