Sears Craftsman 3-Gallon, 1.5 HP Air Compressor Hums

I have a two year old Sears Carftsman 3 gallon, 1.5 HP Air Compressor that has worked fine until recently. Now, when I turn the switch on the motor will just hum or buzz and nothing happens. Any suggestions? The motor is oil, with capacitor start. Is this a symptom of a capacitor problem?

Thanks, JIim

YES IT MAY BE THE CAPACITOR . IT COULD ALSO BE THE WIREING IN THE MTR, THE PUNP ITSELF.

Check the oil housing and there should be a plate that can be removed to see the piston rod connecting to the shaft. If dirty oil or low oil level, the piston rod may have overheated and broken, causing it to slide down and JAM the shaft. That will stop the motor from turning.Have rags handy, because the oil will come out when the plate is removed

I have a 3 gallon 1HP Craftsman air compressor has worked fine for years but now it won't build air pressure over 20lbs. Any suggestions?

Make sure there are no air leaks first.
Your pressure valve may need resetting or replaced as it could not be working. Your compressor might be wore out.
Is there a gizmo that you can turn to set pressure. if so that might not be working if you have tried to set it.

I have a Cleman 4 Gallon, 1.75 HP, Powermate air

When mine hums and trips, it is one of two things, Not warm enough, only does this when it is cold out, and 2 would be not enough juice, I have to have a 20 amp breaker or it doesn't run. And if I use a cord, it has to big. The slightest drop in amperage and it will not run, yours might have the same problem, mine is only 1 1/2 HP. It draws some 16 amps at start up and then idles down to 13 to run. A 15 amp breaker, forget it. Cold out, forget it. It wasn't just mine though, we did a house last winter and made one bathroom heated with a gas heater with 3 compressors in there just to keep them warm, there was no room for us. Hope this helps.

No air output, but motor runs.

check your popoff valve first. it is the valve with the ring hanging on it. You will hear the air rushing.

If you don't hear any air rushing, you may have fried the piston rings or broke/chipped the piston(not your fault)..especially with oiless compressors
