One of a couple of possible issues here:

With set on volume goes way up on its own and will not with remote or buttons on set go down.

Put the remote away or remove batteries to see if it is doing this (unlikely but easy to check)

what issue do you have and are you using a cable or some kind of box with the set as they have Volume controls on them also.

WE HAVE A RCA HTS 5000 THAT WE CAN NOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO ADJUST SO THE VOLUME IS NOT ALWAYS SO LOUD BUT THAT CHANGES WHEN THE MOVIE OR SOUND CHANGES

Need more info. Are you using the volume control on the unit as your main control or the volume on the TV? I have a setup in which my sound is routed through a 5.1 Teac amp. The sound level on the amp os set and not changed. The volume control on the TV dictates the amount of sound. If the amp volume is set too high, then this will be amplified even more through the TV's sound input (the red and wite RCA cables).

If this is the case, turn down one of the folumes (the one that remains unchanged) and see what happens.

I have a Makita radio and the volume knob has something wrong with it. Most times when I turn the volume it gets either real loud or it goes totally quiet then there is no adjustment at all. When this is...

The volume is controled by a variable resistor, known as a potentiometer, which is inside the radio at the end of the spindle the volume knob is on. It's made up of very thin discs encased in metal. These discs break easily and when part of one breaks off you get the problem you have described. The only solution is to replace the potentiometer. If you think you could do it yourself you need to take the reading, in ohms or more likely Kilo ohms, and look for one of similar value. If you don't think you could do it yourself it should not cost much to have it replaced in a repair shop.
