This is almost one I'd prefer not to answer because it's not good news and usually posters just kill the messenger.
In this particular model sony the focus block P/N 8-598-955-31 are common failures which can cause the flickering but not usually shutdown. Also a common failure is the crts used in making this unit and they are not economically repairable. The symptoms there are exactly what you've described, flickering then shutdown. The flickering is caused by current leakage in the crt and are especially prevalent in serial numbers beginning with 90xxxx. Sony even put out a bulletin on this issue some time ago and offered part warranty on the parts for replacement. That offer has since expired.
You can remove the lower front panel and expose the lower area of the crts and focus block. If you take the the rubber end of a screw driver and slightly tap on the neck of each crt while watching Tv you can confirm the described failure of the crt if it flickers as you tap. We techs call this the slap and tickle method but it is VERY effective in this case. This does not in ANY way rule out having it diagnosed by a qualified technician, which I strongly suggest, it simply helps in confirming the diagnosis yourself.
Sorry

3 blinks is a lamp cover error, did you make sure that the lamp cover is screwed in tight? Also check the lamp cover for deformity, there is a problem with your model where the set over heats and melts the lamp cover a little causing it not to make connection with the lamp cover switch. Let me know if you find either of these problems? If not we can troubleshoot a little further.

One thing that you might check seeing that this set is so old, is the fluid in the tubes. Especially the blue one. The cooling fluid should look clear, if it looks cloudy that could be your problem. There are kits you can buy to change the fluid out.

For CRT projection TV's, this indicates that the Green picture tube is burned (warn out). The less green that strikes the screen, the more redish the image will look. You will need to find an old school TV repair shop that knows how to replace picture tubes.
In the case of a DLP style TV, the color wheel needs replacing.
