Question about CD Players

CD Player My 12 year old Magnavox CD Player will not play the CD stored in it.  The screen has DEF displayed.  What does that mean?  How do I fix it?  How do I get my seven CDs out?  Thanks

From what I can see, two things needs to be tried, 1 get the cd's out & 2 try to get the system to play cd's in the future.

first take the unit apart making sure tht it is unplugged from the mains, before you start. most of these types of systems are a bit fiddely so make a mentle note of what goes where, you clearly are aiming for the cd draw, I should be quite straight forward but be very careful that you don't tug any connections away for the boards.
once you get to the cd tray you may be able to look at the mechanics toactually see what the physical problem is with the draw, ie broken drive belt etc. repair if you can (easier said than done in some cases)

to clean the lense the link below shows a lense from a Playstation 2

http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.steveselectronics.biz/products/cd-lenses/images/PS2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.steveselectronics.biz/products/cd-lenses/sony/sony-cd-lenses.html&h=190&w=345&sz=14&hl=en&start=14&usg=__ISw9e64VyAU04E8mfsivGaXI-0c=&tbnid=AgO2CODAQzIW-M:&tbnh=66&tbnw=120&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dps2%2Bcd%2Blense%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

it's the blue glass bit shown in the image on the far left hand side. either try and clean with a lint free cloth or just give it a good blow. or physically remove any lint or obstruction that you can see.
then reassemble the unit.

if it still does not play CD's then at least you will have retrived your cd's.

hope this has helped in some way.

Its the problem of the lens which reads the cd which you insert in the player.if that lens has got dust on it or any moisture collected on it due to humidity problem then also it shows same error. if the lens is faulty changing the lens is the only option.but for dust or moisture cleaning the lens with a moist tissue will help.for the cd stuck it you can open the screws on the back side of the device and remove the front cover and proceed further from there and that stuck cd can be removed.also get your cd checked in some other device and confirm if it is working properly or not.if the cd is faulty then also it shows this message.
thanks.

How to Clean the Laser Pickup Lens on your CD Player

If you need to clean the laser pickup lens on a CD player, follow these simple steps.

Purchase or borrow a lens cleaner disc and try it first. You can find these things really cheap at any large department store. They usually get the job done well. However, you may need to clean the lens manually if the store-bought cleaner fails.

Remove the outer casing of the CD player. Remove the screws that mount the top casing onto the bottom of the CD player and slide the top casing off. This will expose the CD deck, which houses the laser pickup lens.

Find the lens. The lens will be glass and under the CD clamp. The lens will probably have a blue tint to it. If you are having trouble finding the lens, you could shine a light on the components and watch for the reflection.

Use a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe the lens. Just a quick scrub will do. Dry the laser pickup lens with the other end of the swab.

Give the lens a few seconds to dry and replace the covering of the CD player. Test the efficiency of the player. If necessary, repeat the process

First try to unplug the power source of the unit for 5-10 minutes. Then when you plug it back in, hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Now try to eject the CD. Or try to play it again.

Why did my Denon Carousel CD player stop working and can it be fixed?

I'm not sure if this will help, but when that happened to my CD player the solution was very simple. I removed the outter cover and took a Q-tip dampened with some alcohol and cleaned the little lens that reads the cd. It's a very common problem, and the fact that yours is 15 years old guarentees the lens is dirty. Some people trash their stero when It could've been good as new with just a Q-tip & little alcohol.

I hope it works!

We have a Sharp cd player - 5 discs and its playing up and not playing the discs properly. we think it needs a service - itsabout 9 years old. How would we go aboutgetting it seen to and about how mu

As long as it is playing and not giving any trouble, leave it as it is. If it is in a room where people also smoke, it could be possible you have to clean the laser. There are special CD's, with a little brush glued on its surface. Don't try to make it yourself.
When you put it in a cd player, a voice tells you to plat trac 12 or so and there it will play for a few seconds, cleaning dust from the lens of the laser.

If the player does have real trouble, go to a repairshop and ask what it will cost. On Ebay, look what a replacement will cost and decide what you want. Repair or replacement.

The picture shows the little brus on my cleaning CD.

You need to pull the CD player and remove the lid to access your discs. They're great units and once you get unjammed it should be good to go.

CD player will not play burned Cd's anymore after 5 years of work

If it has been playing CD's for over 5 years (really reliable CD player.) then I'd think it's had it's life, it needs to rest now. Meaning it's dead so you either get a replacement or a get a new CD player.

This is what happened to my mum by the way. ;)

`Sony CD player won't play burned discs

Many of the older Car CD Players will not play CD-R's or they may with static sounds behind the music. What you need to do is try using a different brand of cd-r disc. If this doesn't work then it means that you may need to replace the CD player because the model that you have may not be decoded in order to play CD-R, CD-RW, play MP3's or anything of that such.
Get back to me if this doesn't work I'll help you square it away.
