42 more than 8 times a number is 114. what is the number?

Translate the English statement into math symbols and solve the resulting equation.
Let x be the number you are seeking.
42 more than some number translates as some number +42
But the some number is 8 times your number x, 8x
You have
8x+42=114
Isolate 8x=114-42=72
Isolate x: divide both sides of the equation by 8
x=72/8=9
Your number is x=9

Make an outline about the subject math alebra

Algebra is the branch of mathematics concerning the study of the rules of operations and relations, and the constructions and concepts arising from them, including terms, polynomials, equations and algebraic structures. Together with geometry, analysis, topology, combinatorics, and number theory, algebra is one of the main branches of pure mathematics.
Factors and expansions a, b real; n positive integer (a ± b)² = a² ± 2ab + b²
(a ± b)³ = a³ ± 3a²b + 3ab² ± b³
(a ± b)4 = a4 ± 4a³b + 6a²b² ± 4ab³ + b4
a² - b² = (a - b)(a + b)
a² + b² = (a - bi)(a + bi)
a³ - b³ = (a - b)(a² + ab + b²)
a³ + b³ = (a + b)(a² - ab + b²)
a4 + b4 = (a² + 2½ab + b²)(a² - 2½ab + b²)
an - bn = (a - b)(an-1 + an-2b + ... + bn-1), for n even
an + bn = (a + b)(an-1 - an-2b - ... - bn-1), for n odd

UNDERSTANDING MATH PROPERTIES OF REAL NUMBERS

Hii,here is list of basic real numbers properties applying them you can solve the problems easily.

Assuming a,b,c,d are real numbers:

1)Commutative Property
a) Property of Addition: a+b = b+a
b)Property of Multiplication: ab = ba

2)Associative Property
a)Property of Addition: (a+b) + c = a + (b + c)
b)Property of Multiplication: ( ab )c = a ( bc )

3)Additive Identity:
a+0 = a where 0 is the additive identity
4)Additive Inverse:
For real number a, there exists -a such that
a+(-a) = 0
5)Multiplicative Identity:
For real number a,
1 X a = a
where 1 is the multiplicative identity
6)Multiplicative Inverse:
For real number X where a≠0, there exists 1/asuch that
a X(1/a) = 1
7)Zero Product Law:
If ab = 0, then a=0 or b=0 or both a and b = 0.

8)Distributive Properties:
a)Left distributive law
a (b + c ) = ab + ac
b)Right distributive law
(a + b) c = ac+ bc

Find the three consecutive numbers? such that the smallest is 57 less than three times the largest

Let the three consecutive numbers be x, x+1, x+2.

Now, the smallest is 57 less than three times the largest...

=> x + 57 = 3(x + 2)
=> x + 57 = 3x + 6
=> 2x = 57 - 6
=> 2x = 51
=> x = 25.5

=> x, x+1, x+2 = 25.5, 26.5, 27.5

So, the three consecutive numbers are 25.5, 26.5, 27.5.
