The flat ribbon cable rubs on the hinge and eventually fractures the connections between the base and the lid. I have kept a couple of units going for years by connecting fine wires direct to lid and base points, bypassing the flat cable. A very fiddly job and takes quite a bit of effort to locate the connecting points. (I have a drawing of most of the points for anybody interested). I have the install CD if anybody wants a copy.
